The Project School

Using our hearts, minds & voices to create educational equity, social justice & environmental sustainability The vision of the Project School is to eliminate the predictive value of race, class, gender and special capacities on student success in our school and in our communities by working together with families and community to ensure each child’s success.

[07/27/21]   2021-2022 SCHOOL DAY START TIME

TPS Families – we have finalized our school day schedule for the new year, and wanted to share as quickly as possible that we will be returning to a start time of 8a each school morning (back from the 8:15a start during the previous year). We believe that this is the best thing for students, teachers, families and for a recovery of lost instruction time. Last year, expanding our arrival window (out of necessity in order to create physical distancing) resulted in the loss of 45 HOURS of instructional time. This is the equivalent of six days of school. We are eager to fix this for the new year!

We look forward to seeing your kiddos each morning – in class and ready to learn – by 8a!

[07/22/21]   MASKING AT TPS IN THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR

TPS leadership has spent the summer following the science and listening to experts when considering how to keep our community COVID-safe moving forward. We have determined that the best way for our school to remain fully open and to keep children and adults safe is to require masking by all individuals while inside our buildings as we begin the new year. The only deviation from this protocol will be when fully vaccinated educators are providing instruction at a distance greater than 6 feet from any other individual. During those moments, educators will have the option to remove their mask, in order to better facilitate the lesson and to support students. Our staff is now 98% fully vaccinated. Any adult not fully vaccinated will remain masked no matter the distance at which they are providing instruction or engaging with children.

We have shared this proposal with the Monroe County Health Department for their approval. They will be providing feedback in upcoming days, and our Board of Directors will receive the draft plan to vote on at their August meeting.

Once COVID vaccination is approved for children 5+, and a period of time has passed that allows for families to get their children fully vaccinated, TPS will again follow the science and consult with experts, in order to determine the future of a school masking mandate. TPS is also proposing a policy to our Board of Directors that will permit us to institute a future masking mandate at any such time as the health and safety of our community requires it, due to COVID or to any other communicable disease. Nothing is more important to us than the wellness of every member of our school community, and while we imagine being at a point where this mask mandate would rarely be needed, we learned this last year that masking made a huge difference in the rates of other typical illnesses such as strep and flu.

Additional details about our 2021-2022 COVID safety protocols will be shared with our families and the community prior to the start of the school year. Feedback regarding this proposal can be sent to [email protected].

TPS families needing assistance in acquiring masks, please contact our Health Aide, Ms. Stacey, at [email protected]. TPS families – get those masks ready…we cannot wait to be all together again!

the project school

DID YOU KNOW? As part of our founding school vision, our faculty works in partnership with students, families and the community to determine an annual Compelling and Generative Topic/Question (CGTQ). The CGTQ and its Throughlines become the theme for the next school year, and serve as the lens through which we explore, learn and grow together in all grades and subjects.

The CGTQ is a core aspect of the heart-mind-voice work we do as a school, and we love involving all constituent voices in its creation! Traditionally we gather together at the end of every school year in a Curricular Summit to brainstorm. Due to COVID, our Summit has gone virtual, and TPS families have now received a survey to share input. We really hope to have many communal voices involved, as well, and in upcoming days we'll be posting survey questions here on our page so that everyone will feel welcome to share their ideas!

Click below to view a sweet short video on CGTQ, and to dive into the archive of past CGTQs and Throughlines -- we hope that this gets your juices flowing to share your ideas in upcoming posts. Our faculty will use this data to work together to finalize this coming year's CGTQ, and then we will be so excited to share it with all of you!
