Join us Sept. 9th for our Director’s Welcome & Open House at the BFCA, 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. The team will lead new patrons on archival tours of our space, share how we can support your research and interests, and how you can support our mission as the sole repository in the world dedicated to Black film. We are also excited to welcome returning IU and Bloomington community members back to campus. If you’re a cinephile or a history buff, this event is for you!

The start of a new school year is just around the corner, and we’re ready to welcome and reconnect with students, faculty, staff and the whole community! I loved creating this project that I have named “Collection 51” during my internship with the Black Film Center & Archive! My inspiration and creative vision for the name of this project were the 51 frames of images that I took of these beautiful Black women. Their longevity, and importance throughout history are my motivation. You’ve seen them in some of our pictures, but we’d like to pause and formerly introduce you to Avery Eichelberger and Liliana “Lili” Kuttenkuler who has joined us this summer via a partnership with the University of Missouri - Kansas City’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences! Their stay with us has been generously funded by a Mellon Grant that UMKC received to place interns and we truly appreciate this amazing opportunity! We’ve certainly been keeping Avery and Lili busy with a variety of archival and center related tasks to build their skill sets, but also have included interactive events such as the Juneteenth celebration and the Indiana Youth Film Festival on their itinerary! Being able to see the behind-the-scenes activities and production of such major events has been invaluable! They’ve already met and talked with many filmmakers, videographers, writers, directors, photographers, and more! We’re so excited for all they’ll see and be able to do throughout July! Thanks again, UMKC! Welcome to the BFCA Family (officially), Avery and Lili! ❤️❤️
