My B-TV students produced this documentary about Walter Somers a few years ago. They loved interviewing him. He is a true unsung hero. https://youtu.be/Gx5QapThUMs

Walter Sommers was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1920. He is a survivor of Kristallnacht. During this dreadful night, his family's grocery stores were destroyed, and Walter's father was taken to Buchenwald concentration camp. Nazi officials promised the family could leave Germany if they sold their businesses and turned over the money to the government. Walter's parents agreed. His immediate family left for the United States in January 1939. Extended family members did not emigrate and perished in the Holocaust.

Walter is a docent at CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center, but with the uncertainty of COVID, he has been staying home to keep healthy. We know our guests miss him, and we are anxiously awaiting the day it is safe to welcome him back!
