FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need to audition for the camp?
- No! Enrollment is open to all high school and college students and teachers, regardless of experience, plus amateur and professional singers. You may only secure a place in the camp by paying the registration fee, so register now, as enrollment is limited and available on a "first-come" basis! See our “How to Apply” page for more information.

What if I am not experienced in Jazz Voice, can I still attend the camp?
- Yes! Campers are accepted at all levels, regardless of jazz vice experience- even complete beginners. We just ask that people arrive with an open attitude and willingness to learn. The camp environment is warm, friendly and supportive.

How much private or individual instruction will I receive at the camp?
- Since the camp has a limited enrollment, everyone receives personal attention and is given two featured solo performance opportunities with a microphone and professional rhythm section at a local jazz club. You will receive four private solo coachings, give solo and group performances, and attend group master classes.

Who will be leading classes and lessons and giving recitals at the camp?
- The faculty of the Steve Zegree Vocal Jazz Camp have world-wide recognition in the world of Jazz. Included in the mix are award-winning vocalists, recording artists, arrangers and master teachers.

Can I conduct at the camp?
Yes! Up to eight teachers or educators will be selected to rehearse a vocal ensemble daily to develop their rehearsal efficiency and vocal jazz conducting abilities. These teachers will conduct on the final concert.

What styles of music will I be able to learn and perform at this workshop?
All styles of jazz singing will be presented, including some traditional vocal and classical choral styles.

Should I bring solo music to perform?
- You are encouraged to bring two prepared and memorized solos. Faculty at the workshop will coach you on these pieces. They will challenge, encourage and inspire you to be flexible, artistic, and set high standards in performance. You will also receive many new charts, sometimes “hot off the press,” and some new group charts written exclusively for the Steve Zegree Camp.

What performance opportunities are there?
- Participants will have the unique opportunity to perform solos and ensemble pieces in public with a professional instrumental jazz trio in a professional jazz club setting—every night at Bloomington’s own Bear's Place. In addition, a final public group vocal concert will be presented on Friday night, featuring all of the group numbers (approximately 17!!) rehearsed during the week.
