I'm missing the question of the day!
This works for JHIP in the winter too!♥️❄️🌨️
This articles makes so much sense! Our kids need to learn to manage conflict, if we always redirect, they never learn that regulation. This is a great read for a parent with children of any age. I see my self as the mother of teenagers trying to redirect to avoid conflict. It may get messy around here, but I am giving it a try!♥️
Thank you IDS for sharing what we do at Jill's House with the community!! I truly love my job and all of the people I share my days with!♥️♥️♥️♥️
Jill's House is a pretty amazing place to be!♥️♥️

At Jill’s House Intergenerational Preschool, we feel that our future has so much to learn from our past, and our past can find comfort in watching our future grow and flourish.

We are a play-based, project-based, emergent curriculum program.

Operating as usual

We’re ready to jump into Friday! Weather doesn’t stop us from going outside to enjoy some fresh air.

Here at Jill’s we go outside in all weather (unless there are unsafe temperatures and lightning). The benefit of outdoor play for children is significant in any season, with a scientifically proven link between outdoor activities and healthy brain development. Research suggests that outdoor play can benefit the mental, emotional, and (of course) physical development of children.

This winter our kids will be getting outdoors as often as possible, both for the fun and health benefits outdoor play brings. Wearing well insulated caps, mittens, gloves, socks and appropriate layers, we will get outdoors.

Children will let you know when they’re too cold.

In our current climate, teaching children about tolerance, empathy, love, and understanding is more important than ever. This has always been core to our program - accepting differences in one another, but knowing we are all individuals who deserve respect and to be heard, no matter our age, ability, gender, race, or orientation. These honest, open conversations are so important with young children as we build a future of understanding, cooperation, empathy, and love. It can be challenging to know where to start with these important conversations, so SPARK is offering this FREE program for parents and caregivers. I hope you find this useful. Love to you all.

Our First Week Back! 07/02/2020

The children have blown us away with their ability to transition back to school and resiliency with new safety measures. Seeing the joy on their faces, and watching these bonds pick right back up as if they were never apart - it has been truly amazing. We are so lucky to be able to be a part of these children's lives. Even though school looks a little different now, we still are able to provide high quality care and education across all developmental areas.

We had an amazing playground work day today! Our teachers worked so hard scraping, sanding and painting. The french drain has been installed, and fresh mulch and sand have been delivered to the playground! So grateful for all the work that has been put into the playground these past few weeks, it is coming along beautifully. We can't wait to have the kiddos running around outside again!

Everything You Need to Know About Loose Parts Play for Kids - Fantastic Fun & Learning

Many of you have found yourselves with ample time to spend at home with your children. This is a great opportunity to revel in your child's wonder and curiosity as they explore learning through play. The wonderful thing about messy play and sensory play is that it can easily be done outdoors to minimize the mess in your home. During our regular days at JHIP, we try to spend as much time outdoors as we can. Your child's body is made to move, and Vitamin D is so important for mood and well-being.

Here are a few of our favorite things to do with your little ones:
Loose Parts Play
https://www.fantasticfunandlearning.com/loose-parts-play-kids.html
These are some great ideas to kickstart loose parts play in your home - everyday objects are transformed through a child's play. Objects like bottle caps, buttons, chess pieces, etc. can create opportunities for creative learning and imagination play. Open ended materials allow for infinite modalities of play and can be changed as the child wishes. Materials without one single intended purpose allow for much longer periods of engaged play.

Home-Made Playdough (recommended age: 1+)
https://www.bestrecipes.com.au/recipes/no-cook-playdough-recipe/v7a0hvfx (no-cook)
https://www.iheartnaptime.net/play-dough-recipe/ (stovetop)
Extensions:
- Add cookie cutters for fine motor development, shape recognition, literacy, and more!
- Offer easy to clean toys to make imprints into the playdough
- Find plants from nature around you to make imprints and facilitate imagination
- Add rolling pins, cutting tools and containers for more fine motor development and dramatic play (food and kitchen!)
- Make different colors of playdough and explore the concept of color mixing (science!) - what happens when you mix red and yellow? What happens when you mix it with a different color?

Sensory Bins and Bottles
https://busytoddler.com/2019/05/clean-the-cars-outdoor-sensory/ (recommended age: 1+) The kiddos just love getting the toys dirty - whether it be mud, paint, shaving cream - and cleaning the toys by dunking them in water is just as fun. We like to add things like sponges, brushes and other cleaning tools to extend this learning.
https://busytoddler.com/2019/02/making-potions-science-experimenting/ (recommended age: 3+, or 1+ with active supervision) grab random child-safe materials from your home, and let your child explore! This is a great activity to do outside
https://preschoolinspirations.com/discovery-and-sensory-bottle-ideas/ (recommended age: infant+) great no mess creations that the kiddos love - auditory and visual stimulation is so important for infant learning.
https://family.disney.com/crafts/diy-sensory-bags/ (recommended age: infant+) The kiddos love sensory bags - watching colors mix together, exploring different textures, experimentation - so much learning happens with these! You can put them on the wall, on a table, on the floor, and on the windows! Just watch for tears in the bag so you don't have a surprise mess :)

Gross Motor/Movement/Music
https://www.themeasuredmom.com/indoor-gross-motor-activities/ (recommended age: 1+) sometimes the kiddos crave more structured play - having these task-oriented activities is a great way to get your child to re-focus while moving their body. Listening and comprehension are important skills to develop, and these fun playful games encourage it!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j24_xH5uvdA
This listening, action song is a favorite among the classrooms.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UcZWXvgMZE
The freeze dance is another favorite - the anticipation waiting for the song to say "freeze!" is so much fun.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyI3qukcTiI
This is essentially a yoga version of "Bear Hunt" - purposeful movement is a great way to build self-regulation and control
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_ShP3fiEhU
Bear Hunt! A favorite among all classrooms. Be prepared for shrieks of glee as you get closer to finding the bear!

I hope you find these ideas helpful! We are thinking of all of you and hope you are well. We are really missing you!
