The Student Alliance for National Security (SANS) is a nonpartisan IU student organization dedicated to promoting vital national defense and global security issues, engaging students in discussion on security topics, and making sure students have a public voice on those issues. SANS was founded in 2006 by IU student Miles Taylor, and re-established in 2012.

We at SANS hope everyone's semester has been going well thus far.
SANS will be co-sponsoring an event being held next week by the Indiana Israel Public Affairs Committee titled: Iranian Power and the Future of the Middle East. This event will involve a speech from former author, diplomat and Pentagon official, Michael Rubin. He will cover a multitude of topics including the current conflicts and political instability that plagues many countries throughout the Middle East.
This event is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, November 14th in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Room 335 at 7 pm.
We hope to see everyone at this event and we'll be sending out information very soon about some other upcoming events of our own!
Remember to register for the upcoming America's Role in the World Conference, which takes place next Wednesday and Thursday! This conference will be a great chance to hear from some of the brightest minds in the fields of global affairs and international relations. We're excited to announce more details on our upcoming Election Series Panel with five different professors from different backgrounds all across IU. We will be joined by Stephan Macekura, Assistant Professor for the School of Global and International Studies, John R. Karaagac, Lecturer for the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Feisal A.R. Istrabadi, Director for the Center for the Study of the Middle East, Sumit Ganguly, Professor of Political Science for the College of Arts and Sciences, and finally our very own Professor Gene Coyle! We will be convening in room GA 4067 of the Global and International Studies Building from 7-8 pm this upcoming Thursday, November 10th to go over and analyze the results of yesterday's very interesting presidential election. We hope to gain a better understanding of the national security and global implications of how the election turned out. So come and join us for a great panel to discuss the future of the United States with some of the most knowledgeable professors on campus in terms of politics, security, policy and much more!

Next Monday, September 12th, join us in room 1060 and the Global Lounge of the Global and International Studies Building from 7:30-8:30 pm to meet your fellow students who are also passionate about pressing issues of national security.
During this time we will discuss our plans for the coming semester on how students and faculty alike can engage in discussions about the state of security of both our country and the rest of the world! We will also be joined by former CIA officer and current Indiana University professor Gene Coyle so that he can give his input on the state of our nation's security as well as some of his experiences while serving in the Central Intelligence Agency. We hope to see you all there next week!
Hope to see everyone at the Student Involvement fair this upcoming Monday in Dunn Meadow from 2-6pm! We'll have a table set up to talk about our plans for events this semester!

Mark your calendars! This Thursday, February 12th from 7-8:30 pm in Ballantine 016, SANS will be holding our first event. Lieutenant Colonel Michael Ogden (Army ret.) will be leading a talk on ISIS in which we will discuss the problems posed by the group and possible solutions to the crisis. LTC Ogden comes to us with 21 years of military service and is a former Professor of Military Science here at IU.

Members! Mark your calenders! Our next security event is on November 3rd, at 6pm in the IMU Persimmon Room. This event will focus on state level security and the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center.
We will be kicking off our Fall Semester Security Series next week with an event that focuses on security at the local level. Lieutenant Teter of the IUPD will speak about Indiana University's preparedness/ response tactics in the event of an active shooter on campus. This event will be September 25th at 7 pm (location TBA).
