Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I bring you sad news for the community of Liberians and Liberianists: Thursday morning, May 4, 2017, Mr. Reuben Mollo James, Dr. Svend E. Holsoe’s spouse, informed me that Svend had passed away in a Philadelphia hospital earlier that morning. Dr. Holsoe grew up in Liberia during the 1950s until his parents sent him to the US for further education. During his entire life Svend was a tireless scholar of the Liberian experience, supporting that passion with his research, teaching and publishing. He founded the Institute for Liberian Studies in Philadelphia, which in 1997 became the core of the Indiana University Liberian Collections. He was a co-founder of the Liberian Studies Association, the founding editor of the Liberian Studies Journal and a one-time member of the Friends of Liberia Advisory Board.

Further details regarding Svend’s Memorial Service will be sent when final arrangements have been made.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Svend’s spouse Reuben Mollo James, his surviving family in Denmark and his friends and colleagues in Liberia and throughout the world.

“Sometimes, people call my way of speaking ranting. Why are you always ranting and screaming, they ask. But here’s the thing…the reason why I rant is because I am a voice for many women that cannot speak out to heads of state, UN officials, and those that influence systems of oppression. And so I rant. And I will not stop ranting until my mission of equality of all girls is achieved.”
― Leymah Gbowee, Liberian activist, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.
