Train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Akagi. The moment you step on the mat, you are learning, training, sharing with others.

Although there are some close meanings for the word Akagi; I've decided to give my meaning in what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has meant to me thse last 24ish years, and that is Growth. Coming together to help each other improve. So I've decided to keep doing what I enjoy the most and that is teaching and help spread the art and sport of BJJ. This page will provide updates and support for not only my website www.akagijiujitsu.com but provide additional support to the gym I teach and train at, The Minnesota Kali Group in Minneapolis. At Akagi, we believe every athlete is writing their own story, and coaching is the privilege of being trusted with supporting the drafts, curating the chapters & developing the novel.

We study them, listen to them, challenge them, and care enough to understand not only the grappler they are today, but the human they’re becoming.

Jiu-jitsu gives us the moments of pressure, failure, courage, success, disappointment, trust; and our responsibility is to recognize what each athlete needs from those moments, curate strategy around them, and help give them meaning.

We make a point to show up in every corner, challenge with hard rounds, guide through the losses and the breakthroughs - because those are the places where character is quietly built.

The goal isn’t to make athletes dependent on their coach or to write their story for them; it’s to serve them in discovering that they are capable of writing themselves. Guiding their self-realization through mental stamina, emotional literacy, fostering community, dedication to growth & challenges; honoring who they choose to be and the understanding that none of us gets there alone.

If they carry those things long after the medals and matches are forgotten, then we’ve done our job.
