Meet Todd Peabody, OD, MBA, FAAO, a member of the IUSO Class of 2003. After graduating from IUSO, he served in the U.S. Navy, including a deployment to Kuwait, before returning to IUSO as a faculty member in 2007.

Today, Dr. Peabody is a clinical professor and associate dean of institutional advancement at IUSO. He also leads the school’s continuing education and Business of Eye Care programs, helping students, alumni, and fellow optometrists continue to learn, grow, and advance the profession.

Meet Frances Miller, a Carmel, IN native and member of the IUSO Class of 2029. Her passion for optometry began with her own experiences with eye care and grew through her work as an ophthalmic technician and service trips to rural Honduras.

At IUSO, Frances is building on that passion through student organizations and service, with goals of pursuing ocular disease and continuing optometric mission work around the world.

We had an incredible weekend welcoming vision science alumni and former faculty back to Bloomington for our first Alumni Research Symposium!

Alumni, faculty and students came together to share research, reflect on the history of vision science at IUSO, and reconnect with longtime colleagues and friends. From talks by alumni and former faculty to student poster presentations, lab tours, and conversations throughout the weekend, it was wonderful to see connections—both old and new—come to life.

After 47 years with the IU School of Optometry, Dr. Neil Pence has announced his retirement, effective August 31, 2026.

Since his IUSO graduation in 1979, Dr. Pence has served the school as an educator, clinician, administrator, and mentor. From 2011-2025, Dr. Pence served as the Associate Dean for Clinical and Patient Care Services, where he played a key role in modernizing the school’s clinical programs and facilities.

Dr. Pence's leadership extends throughout the profession, including service with Academy, the Association of Optometric Contact Lens Educations, and ASCO. His contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, most recently with the 2026 American Academy of Optometry Michael Harris Award for Excellence in Optometric Education, which will be presented this fall.

Fernando Mendoza thought the strain on his eyes was normal.

Then an Indiana University vision screening revealed he’d been living and playing with farsightedness for years without realizing it.

Across Indiana, students and faculty from the Indiana University School of Optometry provide thousands of free vision screenings each year. By identifying problems that often go unnoticed, these screenings can remove barriers people never realized they were facing.

For the students providing care, the experience is hands-on preparation for the profession they’re about to enter. For the patients, it can change how they move through the world almost immediately.

Sometimes, seeing what’s possible starts with someone noticing what others missed.
