IU Kelley Institute for Social Impact- Alternative Break Program. Providing service learning experiences in hopes of creating active citizens.

ABP allows students to travel to communities to engage in service relating to social issues, such as poverty, hunger, homelessness and the environment. Our trips completely immerse you into diverse environments, which enable you to experience, discuss, and understand social issues in a significant way.

As we gear up for our spring break trips to take off, we can’t help but reminisce on our past trips this year 💛 These photos are from our trip to Ghana where participants volunteered with @global_mamas, whose mission aims to provide sustainable livelihood for women in Ghana through producing fair trade products. The second photo showcases the Batiking process, which is how the women dye the fabrics they’re working with. We can’t wait to see what awesome experiences our spring break participants get to have! 🌞💫 #SocialImpact @ Ghana


Greetings from @ircatlanta ⭐️📍 Our winter break trips are in full swing and our participants in Atlanta are having an awesome time. With the International Rescue Committee, our students are learning first hand how refugees facing incredible odds can thrive in America with the help of volunteer programs. In their free time, our participants visited the Coca Cola factory 😄✨ Keep up the great work! @ Atlanta, Georgia


Today our participnts in NYC spent their day with @citymeals and @hunger_free_america followed by a stroll through Central Park 🏙❣️💫 They were able to see firsthand how hunger affects New Yorkers, which allows them to understand why this volunteer work is important both in NYC and in our local communities. Tonight they will reflect on their day and share their unique perspectives on what they saw 💭

Leader’s Retreat ✅
The Leader’s Retreat is an important day for our Site Leaders as they prepare to embark on their respective trips. They learned how to lead valuable discussions, respond to a myriad of possible situations, and create an inclusive environment. The retreat included ice breakers, breakout sessions, cultural center visits, and discussion groups. Shoutout to all of our awesome leaders and our Education Committee for making this day possible! 🌞🧡🤩🌏 @ Indiana University

From Microfinance to Fair Trade and Women’s Rights, ABP sends students around the globe during Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring Break to volunteer with communities in need. Meet Becky! 🌞😊 Becky is a sophomore majoring in finance with a minor in Spanish. She’s a past participant on our trip with @fundacionenvia, and will lead our trip with @juniorachievementusa to Philadelphia this year! Her favorite ABP memory was assisting a local woman in Oaxaca reorganize her storefront with her handmade tapestries. “It was incredible witnessing her passion for the business and even more inspiring to watch her acheive her ambitions considering that we are the same age!” We can’t wait to see what new memories your trip this year will bring! ❤️✏️📙

This is Gabriela! ☀️ She is a senior majoring in a public policy analysis and sustainable business. She was a participant with @organizationearth_gr in Greece and will now be laading the trip with @global_mamas in Ghana this year! Gabriela summarized ABP perfectly by saying, "You set out to make a difference in the world, only to come back and realize that the biggest difference is within yourself. ABP initiatives are true tests of character and empathy and will challenge the way you see the world around you." 💭🌱


Say hello to Satvika! 👋🏼☀️ She's a junior majoring in Economics. As both a past participant and site leader on our trip to South Dakota centered around revitilizing extinct languages, she's off to NYC this year to lead our trip focused on hunger and homelessness. 🏙 Satvika encourgaes others to join ABP "to find a community of individuals committed to educating themselves on the issues that may not necessarily pertain to them, but plague those around them." Meet Gabby! 📍🌊 She's a senior studying entrepreneurship/corporate innovation, sustainable business, and international business. As a past participant with, she will now be leading our trip to Washington DC focused on prison reform! Gabby recalls her site leaders supporting her during the trip and beyond; she reminds participants that site leaders are an invaluable resource and fantatsic mentors. Guess where we’re headed tomorrow? Ghana! Follow along with our very own VP of Development, @patty.moon43, as she walks us through a day in her life interning for @global_mamas.
Not only is she our VP of Development, she’s also a site leader for our trip to Greece! Patty is a senior majoring in public policy analysis, political science, and Latin. This year she went on our trip to Ghana (and loved it so much she went back for the summer 😊). She encourages people to join ABP because of the unique perspective that each trip offers on what we can do to facilitate positive change in the world. You’re awesome, Patty, and we can’t wait to spend the day with you in Ghana tomorrow!

Last year she was a participant on our trip with in the Dominican Republic. Say hello to Apurva!📍✈️ She's a sophomore majoring in marketing. Last year, she was a participant on the trip to Mexico as a volunteer for @fundacionenvia . This year she will be a site leader for our trip to Detroit! Apurva's fondest ABP memory is making tamales with a local woman who uses her microfinance loan through @fundacionenvia to run her cooking business. We can't wait to see what new memories this year will bring for you and your participants!

Meet Haeli 🌲🌞 She’s a sophomore majoring in economic consulting, public policy analysis, busniess analytics, and psychology! Last year she went to Puerto Rico with ABP to volunteer with @plenitudpr. This year she will be leading a new trip focused on public health and water education! Haeli encourages you to join ABP to gain a new perspective and appreciation for different cultures and their purposes. We can't wait to see you impact the lives of those around you on your trip, Haeli!
