COVID-19 Response - AIF

A note from our friends at UC Berkley South Asia Studies:

The Institute for South Asia Studies has been following the Covid-19 news from India with growing alarm. Stories of people being turned away from hospitals because of oxygen shortages have been particularly heartbreaking. Against this backdrop, many nonprofits are doing great work procuring badly needed supplies of everything from oxygen to PPEs, feeding the poor, and offering other forms of succor to the desperate. We'd like to give a shout out to a few of them (while stating that there are many more out there who are doing amazing frontline work and could do with your support). Please give as best as you can.
The American India Foundation (AIF)
The American India Foundation is launching Phase II of it's COVID-19 relief effort to provide infrastructure support (such as oxygen supplies), to protect front line workers via PPE and other measures, and to build community resilience through campaigns and
nutrition. Donations are accepted from the United States: Donate HERE https://aif.org/donate/covid-19-response/?mc_cid=c975fc74b1&mc_eid=84251f87f6

critical need in the Delhi NCR region. Donations are being accepted in India and internationally: Donate HERE https://hemkuntfoundation.com/oxygen-cylinder/?mc_cid=c975fc74b1&mc_eid=84251f87f6

[01/07/21]   IU HISTORY GRADUATE STUDENT ASSOCIATION TWITTER CONFERENCE, MARCH 12, 2021
POWER, BELONGING, AND IDENTITY
It is our pleasure to announce that the Indiana University History Graduate Student Association will conduct its annual Paul Lucas Conference via Twitter on March 12, 2021. While COVID-19 prevents us from holding our meeting in its normal format, a Twitter conference will allow presenters to share their research and receive feedback from their peers around the globe. We believe that this is an exceptional opportunity for graduate students to practice sharing their research via a different medium.
We solicit your titles and abstracts for the Paul Lucas Conference, which will center this year on the themes of Power, Belonging, and Identity. We believe that these concepts are particularly relevant to the current moment and will allow many graduate students to illustrate their broader research. While presenters are welcome to consider how their work illustrates the historical roots of the supposedly unprecedented events of 2020, our scope this year is purposely broad. This allows participants to frame topics around their interests as they examine change, continuity, and the relationships between individual lives and broader social forces.
We welcome submissions from graduate students of all disciplines, geographic specializations, and chronological focus that address the conference’s general themes. For instance, presentations might discuss questions concerning the use, navigation, and contestation of state power in moments of crisis. Likewise, they might examine the creation, experience, or evolution of individual or group identities. Others might be driven to analyze how constructed categories like race, gender, and class have been used to delineate belonging in local, national, and transnational communities.
Our format builds on the successes of recent academic conferences held on Twitter. The HGSA Conference Committee will assign presenters to panels and introduce each scholar via its own Twitter account. We will then link to the individual’s Twitter account. Each presenter will have 15 minutes to publish between 8-12 tweets from their account. Each tweet provides space for 280 characters and an embedded video or image. This format provides scholars space to introduce their research, briefly analyzing 1-3 primary sources, and illustrate how their analysis and larger argument speak to the conference’s themes. A discussant from the IU History faculty will comment on each panel.
Submission Details: If you are interested in participating, please send your presentation’s title, a brief abstract, and your CV to [email protected] by February 1, 2021. The HGSA Conference Committee will evaluate proposals and inform participants of their acceptance and panel assignment. For questions or additional information, email [email protected].

General information

Modern India has more than a billion citizens, nearly 16 percent of the world’s population. India today is a reflection of millennia of interaction and exchange across a wide spectrum of cultures and civilizations. Critical contemporary intellectual, political, and social issues—including security, social equality, economic and political development, and the role of historical relationships—are all being debated in India, and how these issues are addressed is of vital interest to the world community. The India Studies Program at Indiana University provides for the interdisciplinary study and critical analysis of the Indian subcontinent and its peoples from ancient times to the present. The primary focus of the India Studies Program is on modern India. Yet in order to understand present-day India, it is important to have basic knowledge of the great periods in history that have shaped modern India. This approach requires a sophisticated understanding of the country’s highly developed arts, music, literature, drama, philosophy, religions, and social and political structures. In addition to providing an overall, comprehensive education about Indian civilizations, the program allows for more specialized work in (a) literary and performance studies, (b) philosophical and religious studies, and (c) social, political, and historical studies. The India Studies Program also offers beginning and intermediate-level courses in several Indian languages. All students in the program are encouraged to take language classes, as well as to consider study abroad in India. To enhance the experience of students and members of the broader Indiana University community, the India Studies Program sponsors lectures, performances, and films throughout the year for the general public. The program also provides educational materials and information to elementary and secondary school teachers throughout the United States. These outreach efforts are made possible by donations from individuals, families, corporations, foundations, and other organizations.
