I wanted to share the latest episode of School's IN, the podcast I produce and host about Monroe County public schools. The latest episode is about Fairview and features a conversation with Maggie Olivo and Drew McKenzie!
Please see the latest message from Fairview principal.
Here is an important update from Fairview principal -

Dear Families,

I wanted to let you know the procedures for distribution of iPads and packets on Monday, March 23, 2020, between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Everyone who will be distributing will have their temperature checked upon arrival at school. No one who is symptomatic or has an elevated temperature will participate.

No one has touched the iPads or packets in over a week. No virus would be living on them at this point.

All workers will be wearing gloves.

No pens will be reused - one per family - Ipads must be signed out.

All persons MUST stay in their vehicles.

Please observe the carpool line. You must come down 8th street heading east and turn right into the horseshoe lane. No one will be allowed to enter the line from Rogers Street on the 8th Street side of the building. The best flow of traffic would be to travel west on 7th Street to Fairview Street. Turn Right (north) on Fairview and then right (east) on 8th Street. This will allow for one car at a time to pull up to the curb. Packets and iPads will be distributed from the curb. This flow should be efficient. Please be patient as everyone is trying to do the same thing. Remember, there is a 3 hour window of time that we will be working. We will help you as quickly as possible.

Beginning Wednesday, March 25, the daily lessons are required. They will be pushed out on Canvas. Packets will be available for pick-up for grades PreK-2 on Monday and Wednesday, this week between 11 and 2. Then every Monday after that until we return to school.

Food will also be available for pick-up on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, every week between 11 and 2 and will be available in the carpool line as well.

If you have medications to pick-up, they will also be available at the curb on the horseshoe drive between 11 and 2 on Monday and Wednesday of this week

If you have a computer at home that can access the MCCSC website and Canvas, you may use your own computer and not have to pick up the iPad. Remember the lessons are required. Please send me an email at [email protected] if you plan to NOT pick up your iPad. You child may also contact his/her teacher directly through Canvas. Beginning Wednesday, March 25, teachers will be available every school day through Canvas from 9-11 and from 1-2, to assist the students will their lessons.

Thank you and take care of yourselves.

National School Social Worker Week is celebrated in March every year. The Fairview PTO would like to use this unique opportunity to honor our remarkable school social worker, Mrs. Ford. Mrs. Ford has the biggest heart for Fairview's students, and the school is so honored to have her as its social worker. School Social Workers are the link between the home, school, and community, and every school in the nation should have the opportunity to have such an important person play a role in the functioning of a school. (PS. Feel free to post a comment and let us know what you appreciate about Mrs. Ford and the role of social workers in schools.)

Our Story

Fairview Artful Learning School staff, students, and families take collective responsibility for providing a respectful, rigorous and engaging learning environment where the artistic process, along with inquiry and collaboration, are used to promote life-long learning and high levels of achievement for all students.

Fairview Elementary is fortunate to have special community partners and programs:

Banneker Community Center sponsors Fairview’s Banneker at the View after-school program

The Indiana Jacobs School of Music provides violin instruction for students in grades 1-3.

CODA Academy, founded by Fairview’s music teacher emerita, Kathy Heise, provides instruments and instruction for students in grades 4-6 after school through grants and private donations.

Wonderlab Science Museum partners with Fairview through grants that provide opportunities for classroom field trips, family visits, and in-school presentations that integrate science with the arts.

The Indiana University School of Education supports classroom instruction with practicum students and student teachers.

Office of Student Learning provide numerous volunteers in the school.

The Indiana University Hutton Honors College supports school literacy efforts.

College Mentors for Kids! provides mentors for 60 Fairview students.

Dr. Peggy Schultz provides Biology instruction to the third grade classrooms and supports the Fairview garden.

Joe LaMantia, local artist, worked with students in 2010 to create the Artisticat sculpture, located on the southeast corner of the building.

In 2009-10 the Sassafras Audubon Society coordinated the chimney swift tower, located at the northwest corner of the schoolyard.

Ivy Tech partners with classrooms to develop arts-based strategies. Through a Community Foundation Grant, they are providing art and theatre instructors for the Fairview Title I Preschool classrooms. They provided an artist in residence to create a sculpture for the B-Line Trail.

And many other individuals and groups!

Why Artful Learning? When Fairview was required to choose a reform curriculum under No Child Left Behind in about 2007, leaders decided on the Leonard Bernstein Center's Artful Learning Model after site visits and collaborative decision making between the teachers, parents, Fairview administration and community members. The LBCenter and MCCSC gave approval.

This model works best when most teachers in a school are trained and practicing the strategies. All of the Fairview teachers underwent training in summers and each year for three years, and added 'masterworks' specific for each grade level.

Masterworks can be paintings, music, photographs, plays, etc. Each masterwork has a concept, that informs the activities, creations, inquiry and reflections of the students.

Grade-level teacher teams chose the masterworks and created the lesson content. Many of the children's masterworks are local so the kids can visit the art (6th Grade masterwork 'Fireworks of Glass' by Dale Chihuly at the Indy Children's museum) or have a local connection (like Hoagy Carmichael's 'Stardust' for the third grade which has the concept 'origins'...and one thing they explore is the origin of jazz).

Artful Learning is supposed to be done during the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters of each school year, with three masterwork units total per year for each grade. Teachers designed lessons that use easily obtained and often free materials. 2012-13 was the first year of full implementation, marking the 'maintenance' phase.
