Duane Shields Davis, originally from Cleveland, recently retired as Director of Vocal Music at Grand Rapids Community College, after 39 years as a full-time teacher music educator. He continues to serve as Chorus Master for Opera Grand Rapids, a position he has held since 1986. Duane recently became the Instructor of Vocal Jazz at Western Michigan University. Duane is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Legacy Award presented by the Grand Rapids Symphony and the Maynard Klein Award for Choral Excellencepresented by the American Choral Directors Association of Michigan. His choral and vocal jazz ensembles have toured the U. S., Bahamas, Japan and Europe, and performed in New York’s Carnegie, Avery Fisher and Alice Tully Halls. Ly Wilder enjoys an active schedule as a performer, arranger, and conductor in the jazz and pop music idioms. Her vocal talents have been highlighted in small-group, big-band, and orchestral settings. She performed for the Walt Disney Corporation as a member of the groups Vocalworks and Disney's All-American College Jazz Band Singers, where she sang with legendary artists such as Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Dianne Reeves, Diane Schuur, and Maureen McGovern. Recognized in both the jazz vocal and instrumental worlds, Darmon Meader is a highly respected vocalist, arranger and saxophonist. Darmon has achieved international recognition as the founder, musical director, chief arranger, composer, producer, saxophonist, and vocalist with New York Voices. As a member of New York Voices, he has released numerous recordings on the GRP, RCA/Victor, Concord and MCGJazz labels. In the fall of 2007, New York Voices released their long-awaited MCGJazz release "A Day Like This," and in January of 2008, Darmon released his much anticipated debut solo CD, And So Am I. Darmon's solo project is a collection of jazz standards and original works, which reflects his varied interests and skills as a singer, saxophonist, writer and arranger. Although the entire project is steeped in the jazz tradition, the CD includes a wide variety of styles, orchestration approaches and concepts.

Last semester, VJE1 and IUnison – the vocal jazz ensembles from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (directed by Dr. Jeremy Fox) – took a trip to spend time with our new friends at the Boys & Girls Club of Ellettsville. Happy 2017 from Vocal Jazz at IU Jacobs School of Music! What is YOUR New Year's resolution? Ours is to continue making music with dedication, direction and passion. The past six weeks of 2016, the IU vocal jazz ensembles were busy in the recording studio trying to do exactly that. Please enjoy a brand new recording from VJE1 of "Wishing Well" (Stern), arranged by director Jeremy Fox. Kathryn Sherman and Kaitlyn Kdubbs Williams sing the improvised solos, and the arrangement features singers Kathryn Sherman, Brian McCallister, Kaitlyn Williams, Alex Berko, Bailey Elizabeth Hinkley-Grogan, Pascal Pahl, Destiny Tucker, and Jake Pressman. Also featuring Alex Valdez on bass, Ellie Pruneau on piano and keyboard, Rocky Martin on drums, and Michael Paik on guitar. Special shout out to Indiana University Sophomore Pascal Pahl, a double major at IU in Recording Arts and Jazz Voice, for the wonderful mix of this recording.

Another BRAND NEW recording from IUnison – the sister ensemble to VJE1 from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, directed by Jeremy Fox! IUnison went into the studio the last few weeks and recorded several pieces, including this Fox arrangement of a Brian Eichenberger song. This features Jared Griffin, April Varner, and Melissa Hartman on the solos. It also features Michael Peters on vocal bass, and Leslie Lopez on vocal percussion, Sushmitha Suresh on soprano, Elena Escudero on alto, and Stephen Shannon on tenor. The second semester looks very bright for this talented and hard working ensemble. Do feel free to pass along and share this video, and let people know that vocal jazz at Indiana University is rockin'!

Here's to life, here's to love, and here's to Phil Mattson – who may have penned one of the most deeply moving arrangements of one of the most deeply moving songs out there. Happy holidays to you, Phil, and to everyone! Put on a pair of headphones and enjoy this new recording of VJE1 from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music singing "Here's to Life." The vocal jazz ensembles were lucky to have our fall concert this past November, where Sunny Wilkinson - Jazz Singer sang this solo and brought us to tears. On this recording, IU's own Brian McCallister sings the featured solo beautifully. The other seven members of VJE1 include Kathryn Sherman, Kaitlyn Kdubbs Williams, Alex Berko, Bailey Elizabeth Hinkley-Grogan, Pascal Pahl, Destiny Tucker, and Jake Pressman. We are proud of each of these students for their dedication to creating some goodness in our weary world.

We KNOW it is COLD around the country today, and want to heat up your day!! Introducing IUnison under the direction of Jeremy Fox – the sister vocal ensemble to VJE1 at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. The ensemble went into the recording studio recently and recorded a number of pieces including the below recording of "Spokane Shuffle," an original piece written by Fox. IUnison's ensemble includes singers Melissa Hartman, Sushmitha Suresh, Leslie Lopez, April Varner, Elena Escudero, Stephen Shannon, Jared Griffin, and Michael Peters. Michael Paik plays the guitar solo, Michael Peters and Elena Escudero sing the vocal improvisation, and Ellie Pruneau plays the piano solo. Rocky Martin plays drums, and Alex Valdez plays bass. Their spring concert is April 13th at 8PM – mark it now in your calendar!

Check out these photos of VJE1 (under the direction of Jeremy Fox) from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music performing in the phenomenal Chimes of Christmas concert in early December, a show directed by fellow Jazz Voice colleague Ly Wilder!
