Roots and wings. Both important. But rarely are families of young children with disabilities encouraged to focus on the wings…the hopes, the dreams, the future. They are told to be practical, to be realistic. But only when families have identified what they hope for their child’s future can they make informed decisions in the present.

Approximately 32 First Steps providers will have completed the first cohort of the FGRBI professional development sequence this November. These dedicated providers have completed on-line modules, attended webinars, and have participated in a series of professional learning community meetings which included video submission and review to advance their coaching practices with families. Transitioning from early intervention to whatever comes next can be overwhelming for families. The ECC has compiled a series of tip sheets for First Steps Service Coordinators and providers to support families during this time. There is also a list of suggested questions for families to ask during their transition meetings. Check it out and comment if you have found other family-friendly strategies!

Dr. Katie Herron, Interim Director of the Early Childhood Center, has been chosen by the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) and the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at CDC to represent Indiana as Children’s Mental Health Champion for 2022-2023. This opportunity will allow Dr. Herron to compile statewide data on infant/toddler mental health in collaboration with a workgroup from the Infant/Toddler Mental Health Summit held earlier this year. Additionally, Dr. Herron will collaborate with state partners to offer two webinars and a series of brief videos on infant/toddler mental health topics and resources. To stay informed on Dr. Herron’s Children’s Mental Health Champion activities over the next year, sign up here: https://go.iu.edu/4BIw
If you are local, this event is a chance to get a unique perspective on disability from individuals with disabilities. Dr. Herron, ECC Interim Director, chairs the City of Bloomington Council for Community Accessibility and her son will be one of the speakers. Join us!
Gather ‘round the Table for an Accessible Journey – City of Bloomington Council for Community Accessibility (CCA)
The City of Bloomington Council for Community Accessibility (CCA) will be hosting Gather ‘round the Table for an Accessible Journey on Monday, November 7th, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Monroe Convention Center. This year’s theme is travelling with a disability.
The event will feature six CCA members with a range of disabilities who have traveled far and wide, from overseas, to big cities, to state parks, and more. All attendees will have the opportunity to talk about their travels, what some of the challenges of traveling with a disability are, and what to expect in terms of accessibility upon arrival. In addition to the panelists, there will be roundtable discussions and an accessibility-focused trip planning exercise. Everyone will come away with ideas on how to make trips easier to navigate (whether you are disabled or able bodied). Some delightful fare from around the world will be served to enhance the experience. The hope is that people who work in the travel industry will join us to hear about the humane ways that people with disabilities want the travel industry to treat their bodies and their mobility aids (a recent report says that travelers who have disabilities spend $58 billion a year and want better access!).
The event is free, but registration is required You may register through October 31, 2022. Visit https://tinyurl.com/Gather2022Registration to register.
