Last day calls for a photo dump!

WOW. We’re only halfway through the trip and I can confidently say this is the most special place I’ve ever been. Using words to describe the Kruger in a way that would capture its intensity and its beauty would be difficult. We had a competition for how many species we could all identify- with just 6 days in the Kruger park our leader had identified 170 species!

Every moment has been a learning opportunity, constantly picking up new things, and being humbled by the amount of knowledge that conservationists have about their spaces.

Today was another beautiful day in South Africa!

We got the opportunity to drive back to the Jock concession, a privately owned piece of Kruger National park to lay some rodent and h**p traps.

On the way we saw some magnificent game and other wildlife.

Once on the Jock concession we were able to take a bush walk, something very few people are able do so deep in the bush. We were accompanied by two highly skilled rangers that know the park like the back of their hands.

I would live these days over a million times if I could!

Today’s highlight: Seeing 10 of ONLY 300 wild dogs left in Kruger National Park (a park the size of Massachusetts).

Hey all! I’m Aysa ace and I am doing this weeks takeover! Follow along with me while I explore South Africa with IU O’Neill Internationals Environmental Management in South Africa course!

I am an MPA-MSES with a concentration in conservation and ecology at IU Bloomington and I am entering my last semester.

Today was one of the most inspiring days I’ve ever had! We did a game drive through Kruger National Park and spotted ALL 5 of the big 5 game animals!! We spoke with the guides who were incredibly knowledgeable on species and behavior and got a good feel for the park we will continue to dive deeper with from an ecological, wildlife, and management standpoint! Until tomorrow!

Guatemala is such a special place. I hope you all get the chance to experience it in your lifetime, either with O’Neill’s Global Leadership Program or on your own. Before I came here past participants had told me that it’s home to some of the kindest people you will ever meet, this is incredibly true.

Aside from Spanish lessons, working on an inventory, reading through manuals, and taking field days to some of the most scenic rural parts of Guatemala, we’ve had some time to explore on our own and with our Spanish school. Some excursions have included trips to volcanic hot springs and saunas, visits to surrounding towns & Mayan ruins, chocolate factory tours, weaving demonstrations, cooking & salsa classes, school dinners, World Cup gatherings, and a couple volcano summits.

FIELD DAYS🐓

On Tuesdays and Thursday for the past 5 weeks my team and I have traveled to rural communities to learn about sustainable agriculture practices. This has included planting seeds, touring greenhouses, building rainwater harvesting systems, creating chicken feeders, and learning how to make organic pesticides and fertilizers.

Along with this we have conducted focus group interviews (in Spanish) with the technicians and community members to assess the effectiveness and implementation of these practices. For our report we are developing an inventory system of over 600 sustainable practices, as well as an impact matrix and fact sheet.

Portugal is so amazing, it was hard to choose just 10 pictures to showcase. I’ve really enjoyed my time so far, whether I’ve been watching a World Cup match, hiking to a secret beach, or shopping with my fellow GLP friends. I’m trying to fill my free time as much as possible, and I’m excited for what the rest of the month has to offer!

Through the GLP - Lisbon program, I am interning at ISQ!

I work in the R&D sector as a policy intern. I am researching carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) policies in the European Union and Economic Area. I am also seeing their possible applicability to the US. This will help ISQ determine how their services can be utilized in the transition to net-zero.

Beyond getting to research a very interesting topic, I really enjoy working in a new culture! I love going out to lunch with my coworkers on Fridays. The fourth image shows an example of a traditional Portuguese dish, francesinha, that they wanted me to try.

My name is Kira and I’m an MPA candidate concentrating in policy analysis. This summer I am interning in Lisbon through the Global Leadership Program (GLP). The Lisbon GLP places students at internships that match their interests and future career goals. So, we are all interning at different spots. I work full time, Monday—Friday, at ISQ (Portugal’s largest technical interface center).
