Attending to our children's needs doesn't mean ignoring our own.

Caregiving starts with taking care of yourself.

Just like finding the right thread to pull when untying a knot, sorting out who 𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮 can start to untangle our emotions and resolve our problems in a way that we can stay true to ourselves and remain connected to each other.

Shouldn't we prepare our kids with 🖤 "tough love" for the real world?

No!

Of course the "real world" is inhospitable in countless ways: 🥵hot, 😰cold, 🌊wet, 🌵dry, 💀dangerous, ⚠️harsh. That's why we build 🏡 homes that are 🛟safe, where we can 🛌rest and 👩🏼‍🍳restore, 🏘️gather to 🌱grow, and 💗connect to 🎨create a better 🌎world.

💕Preparing for the real world starts with real love.

Open and honest communication is the center stone of a ♾️boundless relationship. Without blaming or shaming, preaching or pressuring, or any other roadblocks to effective communication inherent in 👉🏼you-messages. Instead, we can do better with ✋🏼I-messages that make tangible and specific observations, disclose our thoughts and express our feelings.

You can sharpen your I-messages and other vital skills for an authentic, connected, and empathic relationship with your children this fall in my Parent Effectiveness Training course.

How can we expect children to respect, let alone adopt, our values of if we show no interest, or even worse, restrict and degrade what they value?

This weekend, let's remember that values are best taught when they are modeled authentically in a connected, reciprocal, respectful relationship. That also means taking an interest in what our children find valuable.

Interesting art that is sadly deeply mistaken about the parent-child relationship.

Parents are separate people from their children. Kids, too, are not simply made from parts of their parents. They are people in their own right.

Too often, this leads to ignoring the agency and the autonomy of children in having and pursuing their own preferences, needs, interests, and values.

Parents and children are connected yet separate people.

I had the good fortune of speaking to several parents and kids at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bloomington today about this fall's parenting class—such interesting conversations, kind responses, and good energy.

This Parent Effectiveness Training course is offered in partnership with BGCB. And, if the cost is an obstacle, let me know—there are several ways of helping with that.

Dr Naomi Fisher provides consistently good and clear-eyed advice for parents on how to support sensitive children (is there any other kind?) while lowering our demands. In this start-of-school season, the webinar she is offering will be a great opportunity to learn more about this approach.

Wishing you all a fun Labor Day weekend full of authentic connection and empathy.

School. Full of demands - and when those demands meet a pressure-sensitive child, things can go wrong fast. How can you take a low demand approach to school - and help your child thrive? Come and and hear Eliza Fricker (Missing The Mark) and I talk about exactly that TOMORROW.

Tickets are selling fast. It is recorded and if you choose that option at the check out, we'll send you the recording after the event.

Please share if you know parents who might benefit.
