What Happens when We Explore the Territory of Safety and Discomfort?
There is utility learning how to be present and engaged in the everyday experiences of our life. Unwinding the false conflations and misunderstandings about safety allow us become active participants with life which might allow us to:

• have uncomfortable but important conversations with our friends, children, families, neighbors, work mates, etc - and even with ourselves!
• stay committed to things that are important to us even when “things get hot”;
• get involved in creating change in our organizations and communities;
• advocate for ourselves as well as others who are often not represented in our culture;
• be in integrity with our actions and our emotions; and so much more.

Read more here: https://integrativehealingnow.com/blog/202-what-happens-when-we-explore-territory-safety-and-discomfort

In my upcoming 2021 Exploration we will learn how life altering it is to Know safety with/in our being, so that we do not have to try to control that which is outside of ourselves in order to “have” safety, and we will learn how to support others in discovering this as well.

I had a fun conversation talking with Move and Bloom talking about some of these very topics!

Anat Baniel Method®NeuroMovement® lessons provided by Ana Maria Pardo, RN Ana Maria Pardo uses slow and gentle movement to upgrade communication between the body and the brain, to enhance learning, decrease pain, and facilitate recovery.

In working as a nurse, Ana Maria realized that what people need most is a better way to learn. To learn how to move after stroke or injury. To learn how to reduce anxiety. To learn how to be with one’s self. To learn how to access one’s full potential, whatever the circumstances. Ana Maria's desire to facilitate learning for her clients brought her to the Anat Baniel Method®. As a NeuroMovement® Practitioner student in training, she opened Move and Bloom to help people grow possibilities.

Wait a minute! THIS is how you can find better balance?! 😮

My dance teachers of yore would disagree. They had me tightening the “3 T’s - Tummy, T**h, and Thighs” in order to stay upright during difficult poses.

And we DO need to use our muscles to help keep us upright, but nowhere near as forcefully as I was taught. Because it’s how we ORGANIZE our bodies that matters most.

One of my students has dubbed this “Physics over Force.” 💖

When we know where our body is in space… when we can gently allow all the parts to support each other by moving them together functionally... we find balance.

In the lesson pictured above, I’m feeling what it’s like to use my pelvis in relation to my legs, my chest, my head, my arms… all as gently as possible.

I’m forming new neural connections that will later allow my brain to unconsciously coordinate my movements with a minimum of physical effort.

Indian Martial Arts and NeuroMovement®?! Yes, it’s true - humans have been rediscovering the same truths over and over again throughout history.

Student Julie shared with me how the concept of increasing range of motion by doing LESS (a feature of NeuroMovement®) also showed up in her Indian Martial Art training. ✨

Julie trained in classical ballet before moving to study in India. No matter how hard she pushed in ballet, she never got her grand battement so high as to kick her face. In India however, she learned to stay well within her zone of competence to increase the height of her kicks.

Her teachers in Kerala would instruct students to do, “Less, less!” if they saw a student straining or reaching for more. Instead, all movement was meant to be loose and comfortable.

By using this approach, Julie was able to kick high enough to hit her hands over her head with her foot. 😃

Where have you experienced similar success by doing less? Let me know in the comments. 🧡

A student of mine has very generously allowed me to share their kind words with you. Text in post reads:

“I’m grateful for your guided neuromovement lessons I’ve had through zoom.

You are an inspiration and excellent teacher…

Yesterday after the feet lesson, I found myself more energized and balanced throughout the day. More than I had felt in over a year now.

It was truly amazing. Thank you.” ✨

So much gratitude goes out to my student for allowing me to share their honest reaction anonymously!

I light up inside whenever I hear what a difference NeuroMovement can make in people’s lives. If you’re curious how it can help you, check out the links in my bio.

I can’t wait to connect with you! 🧡

“Be yourself!” is pretty common advice. And like lots of things said to young people, it often left me wondering, “Yeah, well, how do I THAT?!”

Knowing ourselves is work; it’s an ongoing process. And it’s not something anyone can teach us directly.

But if we can learn to:

Tune in to what we’re really FEELING,
NAME it, and
ACT on it with intention,

we’re on your way to living authentically.

That’s actually what I’m doing in this video. Sure, it’s labeled as a lesson for shoulders, but it’s also a lesson for living.

When I know what I feel when I move my body, I can decide if I like it or not. I can try it differently to see if I can find a variation I like better. And I do it all with PURPOSE.

And this skill transfers to my emotional and spiritual life, too. Once I learn the process behind NeuroMovementⓇ lessons, I have a tool I can use ANTYIME I NEED IT, whether it’s in my work, my play, or my relationships.

Where would YOU like to use this skill? Let me know in the comments! 💖

Hugs - Ana Maria

Lisa Meuser and I have started what we hope will be a new tradition of “Walk & Wonder.” We all need other people to revel with us in curiosity and awe - to shoot the breeze with us as we ponder life’s big and small questions.

Certainly I do! And who better to share my musings than a fellow somatic practitioner?! 🧡

On our most recent walk, Lisa and I briefly lit on the idea of compassion: we don’t need to agree with or understand another person in order to have deep feelings of reverence for them.

This compassion is at the heart of being able to share with each other - for it is in disclosing our thoughts and feelings to another that we create relationships.

How do you think about compassion? Let me know! I’d love to dwell in wonder with you, too. 😊

If you’d like to hear more from Lisa, find her Lisa Meuser on FB and IG, and at Integrative Healing Now on the web. 🙏🏽

Anat always says that our brains were made to “Make order out of the disorder and sense out of the nonsense.”

I can FEEL the truth of that when I read a carefully crafted piece of writing. When the words perfectly reflect the author’s intended meaning, when the words perfectly capture the emotion behind them, I read them and instantly calm.

Ursula LeGuin was a master of her craft. Words were her medium, and she wielded them with precision. Settling into her writing feels like listening to a perfectly composed symphony.

Our brains recognize sense and order. A clear, intentional action has the power to soothe us just by witnessing it. 🌺

What clear, intentional actions bring you a sense of peace? Let me know in the comments below.

Fred Rogers said, “Discovering the truth about ourselves is a lifetime's work, but it's worth the effort.”

One good way to find out what we like and what we dislike is by trying different things.

Children do this through imaginary play. They put on costumes and take on new roles.

In the process, they discover what works for them and what doesn’t - all while having fun!

We adults can grow possibilities for ourselves by harnessing the power of imagination and variations.

To learn more about these essentials and the power of the brain to change, visit my website (link in bio).

I can’t wait to see you there!

Warmly,

Ana Maria

Do you recognize this book cover from the little bits that peek out behind the blue heart? 💙

Inspired in part by the style of writer and physician Oliver Sacks, Feldenkrais wrote this case study about one of his own students.

In “The Case of Nora,” Feldenkrais describes his approach in helping Nora rehabilitate from a stroke. Nora’s family brought her to Feldenkrais after extensive medical treatment in Switzerland.

Nora had stopped improving and wanted to regain the functions lost due to brain injury. She and her family hoped Feldenkrais could help her fully recover.

While I won’t give away the ending (it’s happy - don’t worry!), I do want to highlight what Dr. Witryol mentioned in the foreword to the 2nd edition:

“[Feldenkrais worked] with a constant attention to [Nora’s] dignity and character.”

There is no duality between body and mind, and there is no healing without attention to the whole person. This wisdom was passed down from Feldenkrais to my teacher, Anat Baniel.

If you’re curious to see how it works in real life, get in touch with me by clicking on the link in bio that goes to my website. Fill out the contact form, and let’s chat just to exchange ideas and information. I promise not to sell you a thing!
