Nancy joined LVA just over a year ago after friends who had become tutors inspired her to volunteer. A semi-retired interior designer, she brought something important into the classroom: curiosity, patience, and a genuine love of language.
 
For a few months, Nancy worked individually with Barbara. Together, they got her a library card, chose a biography, and created a weekly routine: read three chapters and write down unfamiliar words or expressions. 📚
 
One phrase stopped them both: “take for granted.”
 
That simple expression became a lesson not only in English, but in how easily people, experiences, and even one another can be overlooked.
 
Nancy has watched Barbara become more comfortable speaking English, and she says her hard work inspires her.
 
Her biggest concern as a tutor? Making sure her students are truly learning.
 
The progress says a lot: one book, one conversation, one new bit of confidence at a time. 💬✨

This one confuses many English learners!

“Can I BORROW your pen?” ✓

BORROW = you receive something temporarily.

LEND = you give something temporarily.

So you might say:

“Can I borrow your pen?”
“Sure. I can lend you one.”

Now it's your turn: Can you make a sentence using “borrow” or “lend”?

Knowing English isn't just about grammar. It's about knowing what to say when you need it. 🩺 Comment with your answer then scroll to see if you were right!
If someone is speaking too quickly, try:

“Could you speak more slowly, please?”

It's polite, natural, and useful in many situations—not just at the doctor's office.

Practice saying it aloud a few times. The next time you need it, the words will be easier to find.

When Sabrina arrived in the United States from the Dominican Republic in May 2025, she came with her mother, hope for new opportunities, and one important goal: learn English.
 
Starting over was not easy. Sabrina had already earned a university degree in General Psychology, but building a life in a new country meant finding her voice again.
 
Through LVA, she has strengthened her listening and comprehension and is becoming more confident speaking. One moment stands out: the first time she completed a full conversation in English. She made mistakes, but she also felt proud. That feeling became motivation to keep going.
Sabrina practices every day through classes, videos, music, and conversation. Her advice to other learners? Be patient with yourself and never be afraid to make mistakes. 🌱
 
Her dream is to continue improving her English, use her psychology degree in the U.S., and build a happy, stable future. 💛📚
