Time is flying by and the end of the school year is upon us. If you haven't yet ordered your 2024 Owl yearbook, now is the time. The deadline for ordering is May 31. There will be no extra books ordered, so please be sure to order soon if you're interested in purchasing. 2024 yearbooks will be delivered in early August.

The 2014 Owl noted that the boys varsity basketball team’s season record was 12 wins, 10 losses. The boys beat WRV, Eastern, Shakamak, and Linton in one season, and it was only the second time in 19 years that had happened. BHS captured their first-ever Greene County Invitational title, and were among the top in Indiana for points allowed per game and field goal shooting. Highlights of the season were Jared Myers being named MVP for the Greene County Invitational, and JJ Kingsley hitting a “clutch three-point shot” at the end of the senior night game.

The varsity girls team had nearly the same record, earning eleven wins against ten losses. The girls were coached by Chris Hitchcok. The yearbook noted that the team faced some tough teams and even though things didn’t always go as planned, they worked hard and had good spirits. Highlighting the girls season was scoring an average of 48 points per game, the best they’d had for the past few seasons.

If you were a player, a coach, a cheerleader, a sponsor, a Redliner, a pep band member, a color guard member during the 2014 season, we hope to see you at homecoming this Saturday. We’re also recognizing the years 1964, 1974, 1984, 1994, 2004, so if you belonged to any of these groups, including pom poms, twirlers, and GAA, we’d love to honor you at half time of the varsity game. The 2004 varsity boys team, coached by Ron McBride, finished their season with a record of 19-6. They were 6-1 in SWIAC.

Reminiscing about the '04 team, Heath Bartlett, the current "Voice of the Cardinals," said the team fought through sickness to win two of the more thrilling games in Bloomfield basketball history, winning their Wabash Valley Classic opening game on a half court buzzer be**er by Jon Neill over New Creations (a charter school that had a starting five that would all play college basketball) and a buzzer-beating shot in the sectional over Clay City by Nate O'Neall after trailing by 5 points with 2 minutes to play." The Cardinals did eventually lose out on a sectional title with a three point loss to WRV who, that year, had an Indiana Mr. Basketball candidate on their team--AJ Graves.

The ladies finished their season with an 11-11 record, going 4-3 in the SWIAC. The team was coached by Jim Rose, who was brand new to BHS. The Lady Cards lost to WRV in the sectional final.

If you were a player, coach, cheerleader, Redliner, mascot, pom pom, NJROTC color guard, or pep band member, we'd love to see you at homecoming this Saturday. We will honor teams from 1964, 1974, 1984, 1994, 2004, and 2014. You didn't have to be a senior that year to be recognized, just a member of one of the teams, squads, or groups.

The 1994 Owl titled the basketball season, "The Most Exciting Season of All." Coached by first-time varsity head coach, Ron McBride, the boys varsity team won the sectional, then the regional, and advanced to the semi-state. It was the fourth time in school history (at that time) that Bloomfield made it to the semi-state, and the very first time they advanced to the final game.

The team had not won a sectional title in four years. They defeated Dugger in the first game where Shane Miller scored 38 points. They went on to face reigning sectional champs, WRV, in the final game. By the end of the game, BHS came out on top and the fans rushed the floor to celebrate.

The Cards face Mooresville in the regional and came out victorious by a score of 58-50. They faced Terre Haute North in the final game, and were winning by 11 at the end of the third quarter, following an impressive half-court shot by John Bucher. Terre Haute came rushing back and the game went into overtime, but the Cards ultimately came out victorious, 51-45.

In the first round of the semi-state, the Cardinals beat South Spencer 43-36. Everyone was excited to be just one game away from the state finals. The boys faced New Albany, and though they tried their best, they got behind early and were never able to recover. They lost 36-66.

Even though they didn't win a semi-state title, the team had a record-breaking season, and one of the most memorable seasons in Bloomfield basketball history. Among his many accomplishments during his high school career, Shane Miller had a career record of 1,476 points, setting a new school record. He was also the top-scoring player in the state for the 1994 season, and was named to the Indiana All-Star team.

The 1994 edition of the girls’ varsity basketball team was composed entirely of underclassmen. The ladies posted a season record of 3-13, notching victories against Shakamak, Union and Shoals. They only lost to Eastern by two. Jordan Bingham was the team’s leading scorer, while Rebecca Graves had the most assists. Angie Edelman had the most rebounds and steals. Anita Miller was the coach of the Cardinals that season.

The 1994 homecoming queen was Courtney McGuire, and she was escorted by Zack Bent.

The 1984 Owl had some great coverage about the basketball seasons for both varsity basketball teams. Calling the 1984 boys' season "the season that wasn't" reflected the frustration the Cardinals felt when a team that was expected to advance to the regional, lost in the sectional final to 12th ranked L&M. The Cards compiled a record of 17-6, Coach Steve Brett's best record at that point in his career, and Senior Keith Vandeventer was named to the all-sectional team. Fun fact: The Owl noted that "The Herald-Telephone" voted the boys' pregrame warm-up "the best in southern Indiana."

The girls' team was also expected to win their sectional and advance to the regional. Coached by Deb Stevens, the team had a slow start, but notched eleven straight win before entering the tournament. Battling illness and injuries, the Cards made it past the Central Tigers, then faced the Linton Miners in the semi-finals. They shot poorly in the first half, and despite a furious second half comeback, they ultimately fell, 40-51. Although a disappointing end, the team captured the county keg that season, and Senior Angie Vandeventer set two school records: most rebounds and most assists. Angie also received votes for the All-SWIAC team, the Blue Chip conference team, and was awarded a full-ride scholarship to play basketball at ISU.

The varsity cheerleaders had a very successful season that year, qualifying to compete at the National Cheerleader Association's national tournament in Dallas. The ladies placed a mere few points outside of being named one of the top squads at the tournament. Senior Christie Jackson was named "Miss Cheerleader" and "All-American Cheerleader," allowing her to become a member of the NCA summer camp staff, and getting to cheer at the Aloha Bowl in Hawaii. The cheerleaders were coached by Miss Cindy Lincicome.

If you were a member of the ball teams, a cheerleader, a coach, a manager, a pep band member, or a Redliner during the 1984 season, we'd love to recognize you at homecoming this Saturday, January 27. We will also recognize the 1964, '74, '94, '04, and '14 seasons. Some of those years will include pom pom squad members, twirlers, and NJROTC color guard. You did not have to be a senior during one of these years to be recognized, just a member of a team or squad during that season. Be sure to sign in at a ticket table so we can recognize you by name. Alumni recognition will take place during half-time of the varsity game.

The year 1974 was the first year for organized sports for the ladies of BHS. Bloomfield’s first girls basketball team had a perfect season with a record of 13-0. They also captured the Girls Greene County Tourney. The team was coached by Shirley Brinson.

The boy’s team had a regular season record of 7 wins-10 losses, but they won the Thanksgiving Classic in decisive fashion, beating Central 58-25. They also won the Christmas Classic, defeating Worthington 73-63. Although they beat Eastern in their first game of the sectional, they fell, in what the 1974 Owl described as a tragic loss, when they lost to Linton, 68-70 in the semi-finals.

Were you involved in the 1974 season? According to the 1964 Owl, the varsity boys basketball team, coached by Guy Glover, had a great season, tallying 20 wins vs. four losses. They finished second in the SWIAC Tourney and won their sixth consecutive sectional title, defeating Eastern in the final game. They lost a heartbreaker in the regional, falling to Loogootee, 46-49. The team set new records for free throw percentage, and offensive and defensive averages.

If you were involved in the 1964 basketball season--player, coach, manager, cheerleader, pom pom, twirler, band, GAA--we hope you'll come to homecoming on January 27.
