Math in Real Life!
As part of Wintonbury’s Family Math Night (organized by the Family Engagement Committee and sponsored by the PTO), students and families shopped at the Wintonbury "Farmer’s Market". This concept was conceived and executed by members of our "Farm to Table" team, teachers Amy Albrecht, Sue Crawford and Lisa Thomas. The produce came from Newgate Farms in Windsor, with funds garnered from a state grant.Given 5 "Wintonbury Bucks", students shopped for fresh produce, which included apples, carrots, broccoli, kale, potatoes, beets and onions. With a small basket in hand, students counted out quantities of desired produce, such as 4 potatoes for $1, or 2 carrots for $1. Finally, at the checkout table, students counted out their "Wintonbury Bucks" into the cashier’s hand and the produce was bagged to take home. Children gain deeper understandings of concepts when embedded in real life situations. The “Farmer’s Marker” provided students with an authentic experience which not only helped them make sense of the world, but also developed math concepts such as number and quantity and social studies concepts such as the exchange of goods and services. Be on the lookout for more math night activities in our upcoming June newsletter.
