Together with Billie Tsien and their firm, Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects + Partners, Tod helped bring the newly opened 𝗢𝗯𝗮𝗺𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 to life.

His instinct for buildings that move people traces back further than this project.
As Tod put it:

"𝘊𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬. 𝘐𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘺 𝘋𝘕𝘈."

He described how the Cranbrook ethos of craft still shapes his design values today. A hand-built quality he sought for the Obama Presidential Center itself, rooted in something he first felt on Cranbrook's campus decades ago.

It's a powerful reminder of what a Cranbrook education sets in motion. Not just a career, but a transformational way of seeing and designing for future generations.

Cranbrook Schools distinguished alumnus 𝗧𝗼𝗱 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝘀 (’𝟲𝟭), together with Billie Tsien and their firm, Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, helped bring the Center to life through an architectural vision inspired by the communities that shape us and the possibilities that connect us.

We are equally proud to celebrate Cranbrook Academy of Art alumnus 𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗖𝗮𝘃𝗲 (𝗠𝗙𝗔 𝗙𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿 ’𝟴𝟵), whose commissioned installation “This Land, Shared Sky" was created in collaboration with artist Marie Watt. The piece unites the creators for the first time in a celebration of Indigenous and Black traditions that blend each of their signature styles.

From architecture to art, their contributions remind us of the power of creativity to inspire, unite, and transform, as well as the role Cranbrook alumni continue to play in shaping our world.

Congratulations to President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and everyone who helped bring this extraordinary vision to life.
