5. Talk through expectations
What do they pay for? How will you help financially? Go through the details down to how the money will get to them. How often will you want them to check in? Remember their schedule will get crazy very soon. Consider scheduling a weekly video call.

4. Get the Fall School Calendar
List at all out: Deadlines for Tests, Finals. Breaks. Add your family dates and schedule time to see each other- on campus or at home. Make plans for getting between one and the other. Many require advance planning. Ever try to get a train ticket from Chicago to Detroit at the last minute?

3. Review the basics
There are many basic things a surprised freshman will discover "nobody told me.” Life away from home is going to demand new skills from budgeting to laundry or car maintenance.

Everyone is talking about this. Yes, our students need to be supported. But they also need facts. They need to understand how they are being evaluated and how they are doing. Students have focused on their grades and achievements throughout high school. Because of their hard work they were awarded a seat at UoM where admission is competitive and selective.
Adjusting to college is not easy. We are happy to talk with students before or after they arrive on campus.

2. Academic Accommodations:
If they have academic accommodations, they need to register online or take the request to student services office in order to access those services immediately. Unlike high school, the school will not reach out to them to offer help. Students must request (or demand) them.
