Students are going inSEINE over this week's educational field trips to the Hudson River Field Station (located on the Piermont Pier)!

Alongside professionals from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, fifth graders at Cottage Lane Elementary School gain hands-on experience not only learning about, but helping to discover more of our local environment. Future scientists in the making rotate through two stations, one of which focuses on the topography and water chemistry of the Hudson River. The other requires them to suit up and work together to catch marine life using a seine net. Back on shore, classes use an identification guide to determine which fish they found and contribute to the Observatory's ongoing collection of abundance and diversity data.

We're happy to report that among the fresh catch of the day were dozens of striped bass — a sign of a healthy ecosystem! SOCSD's proximity to sites like this provide learners with a unique, tangible opportunity to interact with the curriculum being taught and bond over shared interests. 🦀🐠🪼

Over the next two weeks, SOCSD is partnering with thousands of other schools and youth organizations across the country to celebrate “Start With Hello Week.” Developed by the Sandy Hook Promise, the annual event promotes an inclusive educational environment and encourages children to make new social connections. School counselors and prevention counselors in the District organize several activities to help drive these efforts.

William O. Schaefer Elementary School and Cottage Lane Elementary School kicked off the week yesterday by asking students to wear a shirt that reflects something about themselves and use it to spark a conversation.

The South Orangetown Central School District is pleased to announce that Dr. Amy Moselhi was named Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, effective September 29, 2026, at the August 28 Board of Education Special Meeting.

In this role, Dr. Moselhi will direct the recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, tenure and job evaluation processes to ensure that the District maintains a highly-qualified and committed workforce, as well as the delivery of high-quality, responsive service to engage and support all employees. She will work alongside administrators and school leaders and serve as a member of the District’s Executive Team with the Superintendent.

“We are so excited to welcome Dr. Moselhi to the department of Human Resources. Amy comes to us with a wealth of experience in education and the public sector that will help us continue to offer a service-oriented approach that places our students, staff and families first. Amy will also be joining our District’s Cabinet and Leadership teams, working closely with fellow administrators and staff to ensure everyone feels supported and has the tools to elevate our dedicated and caring staff,” said Superintendent of Schools, Brian Culot, Ed.D.

Dr. Moselhi has served as the Director of Human Resources and DEI+B Coordinator for the Edgemont Union Free School District. Prior to assuming this role, she served as the district’s Assistant Business Official and Treasurer. Dr. Moselhi brings extensive experience in organizational leadership, human resources, finance and public service. Prior to her work in education, she served as Chief Executive Officer of United Structure Solution, where she also oversaw Human Resources. Her public service experience includes serving as a Board Member of the New Rochelle Industrial Development Agency and the Corporation for Local Development Agencies, as well as a member of the New Rochelle City School District Board of Education, where she served as Board President.

Dr. Moselhi earned her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Russell Sage College and completed the Policy Fellowship at Teachers College, Columbia University. She also holds a Certificate in School Management and Leadership from Harvard University and a Certificate of Advanced Study in School District Business Leadership from the College of Saint Rose. She earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Civil Engineering from Columbia University and the University of Toronto, respectively, and is certified as a School District Leader and School District Business Leader.

The District extends our sincere appreciation to Joseph Lloyd, Ph.D., who has resigned from the position of Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources to serve as Superintendent in the Tri-Valley Central School District. We are grateful for his many years of service to the District and wish him continued success in the future.

SOCSD remembers: Throughout the day, South Orangetown schools are marking the 25th anniversary of 9/11, the National Day of Service and Remembrance. Following are snapshots of activities happening across the District.

🇺🇸 At William O. Schaefer Elementary School, classes read the book "30,000 Stitches: The Inspiring Story of the National 9/11 Flag" by Amanda Davis, talked about heroes and made crafts inspired by the book.

🇺🇸 Cottage Lane Elementary School held its first character education assembly of the year – during which Carmen Agra Deedy's "14 Cows for America" was introduced as the book of the month and Hearts for Heroes as the building-wide project for September; grades 3-5 also learned the history behind the CLE Liberty Bell.

🇺🇸 A group of South Orangetown Middle School orchestra students, under the direction of Music teachers Christine Lee and Nicolas Kent, performed “Three Patriotic Chorales” during morning announcements, following a school-wide moment of silence. Sixth graders then gathered for a special lesson led by Social Studies teachers Luke Freeley and Eric Goldstein. Students learned about 9/11 Day’s “UNITE For Good” movement and were challenged to pledge to perform a good deed in honor of the 25th anniversary. They also viewed newspapers from the days following 9/11, learned about local heroes who lost their lives including firefighter Dennis McHugh and wrote thank-you cards to first responders.

🇺🇸 At Tappan Zee High School, retired Port Authority Police Department Lieutenant Henry Borawski, father of Social Studies teacher Matthew Borawski, spoke about his first-hand experience responding to the World Trade Center attack and working on the recovery effort in the months afterward. "One way to honor the people that passed away that day is to do the right thing and be kind to and support each other,” noted Henry. “From a social studies standpoint, this is an example of a primary source and an eyewitness account. If you have anyone in your family who lived through major events, I implore you to talk to them,” explained Matt. “Whether it was September 11, the world wars or Pearl Harbor, ultimately there will be a day when there is no one left to ask what it was like." In the afternoon, Henry also spoke with his grandchild’s fourth grade class at CLE.

🇺🇸 Earlier this year, the District partnered with the TZHS Student Organization to honor TZHS graduates who were lost on 9/11, as well as former students who later passed away from illnesses related to their exposure at Ground Zero. Later this month, the District will unveil a 9/11 Memorial plaque at TZHS honoring both groups.

Across grades K-12, our faculty, students and staff also took part in a moment of silence. Now and always, we remember the innocent lives lost and keep their loved ones in our thoughts.

Lessons aren't just reserved for the classroom!

Our schools this week are wrapping up their first bus safety drills of the year. New York State requires that every school perform a minimum of three — one each in the fall, winter and spring. Over the last several days, students reviewed appropriate conduct (e.g. keeping the aisle clear) and where different features are located (e.g. cameras, emergency brake and exits) as well as practiced procedures for evacuating (e.g. via the rear emergency exit). 🚌

"We not only want you to be successful students, but successful people, too."

The administration team at Tappan Zee High School this week is visiting Freshman Seminar classes to share helpful tips for staying organized (both physically and digitally) over the next four years — and beyond. Principal Melissa Luciano and assistant principals Kevin Carbonetti and Alex Levine, Ed.D., today introduced themselves to Maria Bruno's students before giving out school supplies for anyone in need of binders, highlighters, agendas and other materials. They also walked ninth graders through setting up color-coded folders in Google Drive that correspond with their schedule.

The school year may just be getting started, but seniors at Tappan Zee High School are already thinking about what's next: college! Twelfth graders recently took part in a Common App Workshop led by the TZHS Counseling Department. Students logged and locked in to review each section of the portal and ask questions as they consider their post-secondary options.

Couldn't attend? Don't worry! Additional opportunities for both students and parents to learn more about the application process are coming up — including the Grade 12 Family College Workshop on September 9.
