David Ray Harman


David Ray Harman, 87, of Willis, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2026. He was born in Willis on June 6, 1938. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Nancy Harman; and sister, Joanne Harman Brusati.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Penley Harman; his three daughters & sons-in-law, Ellen Harman Mukai, Sharon Harman Whalen (Michael), and Laura Harman Le Roy (Tyson); and his seven grandchildren, Thomas Mukai, Justin Whalen (Regan), Katie Whalen, Matthew Whalen, Jack Le Roy, Jabe Le Roy, and Luke Le Roy, all of whom he loved dearly.

David was a graduate of Willis High School’s Class of 1956. He attended Virginia Tech and graduated in 1960 with a B.S. in Agriculture. He served two years as an administrative officer and instructor in the U.S. Army Quartermaster School at Fort Lee. He devoted his professional life to public education and took his first teaching job at Rocky Gap High School as an Agriculture teacher and varsity boys’ basketball coach. It was there that he first met Jean. After two years, he moved home to Willis and taught Agriculture and became assistant principal at Floyd County High School. He spent the remainder of his career at the Floyd County Public Schools central office as Director of Instruction.

A standout Willis High School basketball player, he continued his love for the game through coaching Floyd Recreation & AAU girls’ basketball for many years. While his teams had many wins, he got more gratification from seeing individuals improve. David loved auto racing and spent many weekends competing on dirt and asphalt tracks across Virginia and North Carolina. As he grew older and began to take a slower pace of life, he found joy in bringing antique cars to cruise-ins where he could admire the vehicles and share stories with people who gathered.

David was a man of deep Christian faith and attended St. Mark Lutheran Church for over 60 years. As a leader in the church, he taught Sunday School classes, served as church council president, and occasionally led services and delivered sermons. His life reflected his commitment to grace, service, and love of neighbor.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 11, 2026 in the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Wanda Childs officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

SUMMERFIELD - Billy Lunsford Childress, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on November 28, 1940, Bill was the son of the late Homer and Beulah Childress, whose love and guidance helped shape the man he became.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Gospel Baptist Church in Greensboro, North Carolina. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. A second service will follow at 4 p.m. at Mechanicsburg Christian Church in Mechanicsburg, Virginia, with interment to follow at Mechanicsburg Cemetery.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife, Phyllis Strock Childress; his loving daughters, Kim Hanner and Sherrie Kruse; five cherished grandchildren; and four adored great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind numerous friends and extended family members who were deeply touched by his generous spirit and kind heart. A special friend, Vicente Hernandes, held a meaningful place in Bill's life and heart.

U.S. Veteran
Thomas Wayne Pauley, age 83, of Bland, VA passed away Saturday, June 21, 2025. He was born June 5, 1942 in Bland County, son of the late Walker Blair Pauley and Cornelia Burkhead Pauley. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Ann Runnels and Rosa Lee Dillow. Thomas was a United States Army Veteran and served in the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his daughter, Monica Lee Pauley Spade and spouse, Charlie Spade of Palm Coast, FL; two grandchildren, Zachary Spade and Devon Adams; his brother, David Ray Pauley of Fairlawn, VA.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon Thursday, June 26, 2025 at the Bland Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Tom Maurer officiating. Burial will follow in the Bland Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before service time.

Garland L. “G.L.” “Geek” Hubble, Jr., age 87, went Home to be with Jesus on Thursday, January 16, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
G.L. was born on January 10, 1938, in Nebo, VA, and graduated from Ceres High School in 1955. Shortly after high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army on January 8, 1962, serving until January 12, 1965, with a station in Munich, Germany. In 1975, G.L. earned a degree in electronic technology from DeVry University. He spent his early years farming on the family farm and working at the Smyth County Schools bus garage. In 1977, G.L. joined Visador, where he worked diligently for 23 years, eventually retiring as a supervisor in the finger-joint department. G.L. was a founding member and served on the Nebo Volunteer Fire Department, as well as a founding member of the Ceres High School Alumni. His devotion to his community was further demonstrated through his service as past president of the Nebo Ruritan Club. A hardworking and devoted family man, G.L. was also a skilled gardener and handyman who was always ready to lend a hand to neighbors. A devout Christian, he found joy in reading God’s word daily until his eyesight began to fail.
G.L. is preceded in death by his parents Garland Hubble, Sr. and Jennie Kinder Hubble; brothers Fred Hubble, Bob Hubble, and Roscoe Hubble; brother-in-law Jack Berry; sister-in-law Santa Fe Hubble; sons-in-law Boone Caudill and Scott Nance; and a special cousin David Hubble.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years Beverly Hubble; four daughters Jeanna Hubble & Jimmy Bright, Rebecca Hubble Lockard & Joseph, Bobbie Hubble Everhart & Alan, and Amanda Hubble Stuart; sister Ada Berry; sisters-in-law Priscilla Hubble and Alma Hubble; grandchildren John Blevins & Yana, Davey Blevins, Mark Stuart, William Everhart, Shelby Lockard, Caleb Everhart, Ondraea Everhart; great grandson Collin Blevins; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00PM, Sunday, January 19, 2025, from the Bradley’s Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with Pastor Aubrey Whitlow and Pastor Wes Eller officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00PM on Sunday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 1:00PM, Monday, January 20, 2025, at Zion Church Cemetery in Nebo. Full military honors will be rendered by the Francis Marion V.F.W. Post 4667 and the U.S. Army National Guard Honors Team. BRADLEY SCOTT DAVIS, 54, of Bland, VA, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2025, as result of an accident. He was born October 15, 1970 in Martinsville, VA, the son of Duane Calvin, Sr. & Betty Sue Newberry Davis.

Bradley was the life of the party. He enjoyed off road riding, hunting, camping with his friends and playing co****le. He enjoyed watching Virginia Tech football and was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, until recently, when he couldn’t bring himself to watch them. He was also known to break out into song, very loudly, especially when listening to Bluegrass music with Granger.

Bradley was preceded in death by his father, Duane Calvin Davis, Sr. and his beloved grandmother, Beulah (“Granny”) Newberry.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Robin Davis; his children, John Wayne (“J.W.”), his loving dog, Hallie Davis (Chance James), Gunner Davis (Isabella Snow), Christopher & Kayla Viars and Brett & Karen Viars; his grandchildren, Koty, Bryton, Abigail, Neyland, Korbin, Savannah and Zayne; his mother, Betty Sue Newberry Davis; his step-mother-in-law, Irene Atwood; his siblings, Calvin & Paula Davis, Lisa & Kevin McGuire and Robert Davis; his stepsiblings, Ronnie & Crystal Atwood, Gina Atwood and Brandon Atwood; his very special nephew, Granger Davis; his nieces & nephews, Kaitlyn McGuire, Krystal & Josh Williams, Ravin Davis and Brooklyn Davis; his great nieces, Scarlett (“Skillet”) and Addilyn; and his aunt, many cousins and special friends.

BARBARA MEADOWS WIMMER, age 81, of Bland, VA, died Friday, October 4, 2024 at Pulaski Nursing Rehabilitation Center. Born August 24,1943 at Bland, VA, she was the daughter of the late John Trenton & Levenia Brunk Meadows.

She was a lifelong member of Central Church, where she served as the church historian. She took great pride in that role.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Russell Meadows, one brother-in-law, Richard Lee Wimmer and one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Wimmer Bowman.

She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Edgar Arnold Wimmer, Sr.; her son & daughter-in-law, Edgar Arnold, Jr. & Debbie Munsey Wimmer; her daughter & son-in-law, Sherri Dawn & Ritchie Havens; her precious babies, her grandchildren, Heather Dawn Rhodes, Derek Neal & Linsey Rhodes, Richard Dylan Havens, Henry Arnold Wimmer and Audrey Claire Wimmer; her precious great-grandson, Ridge Brown; brother & sisters-in-law, Johnny & Susie Meadows and Charlotte Meadows; sisters & brothers-in-law, Linda Sarver, Patty & Greg Puckett and Brenda & Robbie Pike; her brothers-in-law & sisters-in-law, Frank & Wanda Wimmer and Bobbie Clyde & Mary Wimmer; and several nieces and nephews that she loved like her own.

Per her wishes, Barbara will be cremated. A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held Sunday, October 6, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. at Central Church with Rev. Dr. Kevin Richardson officiating.
