The recent events of Hurricane Helene have been nothing shy of horrific. My heart and prayers go out to everyone affected.
In many situations, having all of the preps and plans in place still may not be enough if advanced warnings are not given and devastation hits your home or location.
However, that is not always the case.
Having the best plan in place for the unexpected will at least provide you and your family with a fighting chance.
Many may say "we don't have the means", here's what I would respond: The next time you go to the grocery store:
- Buy 1-2 extra cans or boxes of non-perishable food items (that you will eat) that has a decent shelf life
- Buy a pack of bottled waters
- Buy an small pack of diapers (if you have small children)
- Grab an extra roll of toilet paper
- Basically any items you and your family would NEED to be OK for at least a few days, then store it in a safe area or stash in a storm shelter.
Do this EACH TIME you go grocery shopping and you'll be shocked at how fast your "preps" will grow.
Prep MUST haves would also include a good First Aid Kit as well as a pack of batteries (make sure you have a good flashlight) and a lighter (or waterproof matches) with some cheap candles.
Have an evacuation plan for you and your family. Connect with neighbors or family and create a plan.
WRITE DOWN emergency contacts along with their addresses and place it in a ziplock bag to avoid getting wet.
Store these items together in a rubber bin that can be easily grabbed and taken with you.
These are just some bare basics to help you start preparing your family.
