This week's artist is Goose. Honestly took me a while to come around with these guys. But Friday morning I listened to Orebolo for the first time and dug it, so I moved onto the full band. (Orebolo is Jeffery, Rick, and Peter from Goose playing as an acoustic trio, Bass and 2x Guitar).

The current reigning kings of the Jam Band scene, these dudes are seriously capable musicians. Rick is a monster vocally, as a composer, and as a guitarist. Peter plays keys and guitar in the full band and Jeff just lays it DOWN!

Fave tracks so far are Rockvale (the track that started it), and California Magic.

This week's artist is Ornette Coleman. Famous for his albums The Shape of Jazz to Come and
Free Jazz (below). Ornette is mostly know as the main force behind the concept of Free Jazz.

On the album by that name Coleman's DOUBLE Quartet (thats two identical quartet) goes on a 54min Free improvisation with very little structure. You can clearly hear two upright Basses, Two drum sets and two pairs of horns. Its a wild ride not for the faint of heart, it lack structure, makes little musical sense, and is more like the Jazz version of sounds from a bustling city than it is the music most people listen to. There are unison lines, so its not a complete free-for-all, but listening in its entirety can be difficult even for fans of heavy improv. There are also some moments of bad intonation to deal with.

Outside this niche, Ornette is a player full of feel, creativity, and technical ability. He is not, however, the cleanest most perfect Sax player you'll hear. He leans into the creative and away from the perfect is almost everything Ive heard. Being one of the seminal figures of Jazz he belongs alongside Monk more then Canonball or Coltrane. In my opinion anyway.

He also sat in with The Grateful Dead on multiple occasions which obviously makes me like him a bit more 😉.
