UGA and the U.S. Forest Service invite you to come and explore a new public garden near Blairsville. The Beasley K**b Native Plant Garden includes a beautiful array of wild and flowering native plants that attract pollinators and work both in natural settings and in residential backyards. This 20’ x 30’ public demonstration garden is located in a sunny meadow on the former Satterfield family farm.

Join the U.S. Forest Service and UGA for a special public grand opening and open house for the new Beasley K**b Native Plant Garden, Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 10 a.m. to noon.

You’ll have the opportunity to tour the demonstration garden with knowledgeable
volunteers from the Georgia Native Plant Society and Towns-Union Master Gardener Association, learn about native plant identification and the value of pollinator habitat, and pick up tips for incorporating native species into home landscapes.

Educational materials will be available, and project partners will be on hand to answer questions. The day-use area is open from sunrise to sunset (weather permitting) and features public restrooms; a covered picnic area is also available on site.

The garden is located near the public picnic and day use area of the Beasley K**b OHV Trails, just off Windy Hill Road in Union County. Access the site using GPS via Windy Hill Road closest to downtown Blairsville. Follow the OHV Trails signs and note that the site is accessed via a gravel road. Carpooling is recommended as parking is limited.

Georgia Mountain REC, AKA "The Experiment Station", is hosting its bi-annual agricultural field day. If you have ever wondered "what do they do there?", the field day is the best time to see the property and learn about our mission and how we support Georgia Agriculture. Participants will tour the orchard, vineyard, ornamental, and row crops while hearing from UGA's scientists.

On March 5th, 2026, UGA’s Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent Josh Fuder will give a seminar on Blueberry plants and care. He comes from Cherokee County and has his own personal farm where he grows apples and blueberries. He will cover all aspects of growing blueberries which will include variety selection, soil improvements, disease management, pruning, and insect management. The program will start at 1 PM from the Georgia Mountain REC auditorium and will transition to the stations own blueberry planting where participants can learn pruning techniques firsthand. There are no costs and no registration, but access to the auditorium segment will be capped at 75 in attendance. Georgia Mountain REC is three miles south of Blairsville on Hwy 129/19. There is a lot of interest in the news regarding wildfires. Managing the fuel on the forest floor is one way to prevent catastrophic damage, but fire can also be used to manage invasive plants. Prescribed or control burn season is fast approaching and knowing why and how to proceed with a control burn is incredibly important.
A Learn & Burn Workshop will be held at the Georgia Mountain REC “Experiment Station” on March 14, 2026. Attendees will learn about the reasons why we burn, safety, objectives, planning, liability, smoke management, the right burn weather, becoming a certified burner, and participate in a control burn on-site. You’ll meet our professionals from the Georgia Forestry, US Forestry, and more who will be readily available to answer your questions. No experience necessary. This program is for beginners and pros, and includes lunch!
Participants should register by going to gamountain.caes.uga.edu/ and visiting our Seminar page or message Kim McCollum at [email protected]. There is a $10 registration fee.
