Cultural Connections Finalist

This photo was taken by Margaret Mary Pace while studying abroad on exchange with the The University of Hong Kong (HKU) this past spring. Pace, a marketing management major with Tech Pamplin College of Business came upon this cultural connection in Kanchanbunari, Thailand.

The title of this entry is "Bathing with Elephants" and the description is "I had the opportunity to wash and bathe elephants, getting to interact with them up close. It was such a unique experience and one of my favorite memories from studying abroad."

In our latest VGC Faculty Spotlight, we’re featuring Eli Jamison and her experience using Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) and Virtual Global Collaboration (VGC) to connect students across borders.

From navigating time zone differences to learning how cultural expectations can shape collaboration, Eli shares some of the challenges she encountered and what she took away from the experience. Now, she’s preparing for another COIL partnership in South America and looking forward to putting those lessons into practice!

Cultural Connections Finalist

This photo was taken by Betul Karanfil while studying abroad with Poly Abroad this past summer in Mainz, Germany. Karanfil, a chemical engineering major with Virginia Tech College of Engineering came upon this cultural connection at Strasbourg, France.

The title of this entry is "Little France (Petite-France=" and the description is "This photograph brings together my appreciation for history, architecture, and art through a view of La Petite France in Strasbourg. Alongside the photograph, I included drawings of the historic buildings that I created myself, allowing me to connect my own artistic perspective with the city's architectural heritage.

Strasbourg is a particularly meaningful place for cultural connection because of its long and complex history between France and Germany. Its architecture, traditions, and identity reflect influences from both cultures, shaped by the city's changing borders throughout history. Exploring Strasbourg gave me an opportunity to see how history can remain visible in the places we inhabit, while also inspiring me to document and reinterpret that history through my own art."

Cultural Connections Finalist

This photo was taken by Ethan Wu while studying abroad with this past summer in Greece. Wu, a finance and accounting major with came upon this cultural connection at Blue Mosque, Istanbul, Turkey.

The title of this entry is "Culture and Religion in the Blue Mosque" and the description is "My friends and I visited Istanbul, Turkey while we were studying abroad in Greece. This weekend trip taught me a great amount about the Muslim religion and the history of the Ottoman empire, where we learned about Turkish traditions and furthered our understanding of the religion and culture."

Cultural Connections Finalist

This photo was taken by Cora Braunstein while studying abroad with (China Educational Tours) Beijing this past summer. Braunstein, a biochemistry major with Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences came upon this cultural connection at People's Park in Chengdu, China.

The title of this entry is "Chengdu" and the description is "A musician plays a guzheng in People's Park in Chengdu surrounded by greenery and tradition."

Now until Oct. 31st, we will be showcasing the different categories and photos from the GEO Photo Contest. First category, is Cultural Connections. These photos highlight a moment where students connected with and appreciated a different culture, enriching their worldview while abroad.

🇺🇸🇨🇱 ¡Articulando la vinculacion desde el territorio!

En el marco de la pasantía de las y los estudiantes de la Universidad Virginia Tech en la Región de Aysén, se llevó a cabo una reunión de trabajo y coordinación que reunió a la alta dirección de la casa de estudios estadounidense, investigadores de nuestro Campus Patagonia y autoridades de nuestra institución.

El encuentro desarrollado en el Salón Multipropósito, tuvo como objetivo revisar el avance de las actividades académicas y coordinar el despliegue logístico de las próximas salidas a terreno, además de las próximas etapas de futuras pasantías académicas en la Región de Aysén.

En la cita participaron autoridades de Virginia Tech, como el Dr. Cyril Clarke, Asesor Especial del Presidente; la Dra. Teresa Johansson, Directora de Educación Global; y el Dr. David Gerrard, Director de Ciencias Animales, junto a nuestro director de campus, el Prof. Juan Carlos Miranda, y el director de Relaciones Internacionales de la UACh, Dr. Patricio Belloy.

Durante la sesión, los equipos también evaluaron el inicio de las clases y se revisó la planificación de los terrenos en el Parque Nacional Cerro Castillo, la Reserva Nacional Dos Lagunas y la Reserva Nacional Río Simpson, entre otras.
