Preparing globally-conscious future faculty members. A component of Virginia Tech's Transformative G
The Global Perspectives program was developed in 2005 by the Graduate School and offered through Virginia Tech’s educational facility in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland. The VT Future Professoriate Program stands as an example through which the study abroad (Global Perspectives Program) and study-at-home (GRAD 5104) portions help prepare future faculty as global citizens. The purpose of Global Perspe
ctives is to prepare future faculty members with a global perspective of higher education. During the trip, participants will gather first hand knowledge about higher education in Europe through (a) visits to important Swiss, French, German, and Italian universities, (b) discussions with faculty, administrators, and students, and (c) dialogue among the group members. In general, the Global Perspectives Program enables graduate students to examine differences in academic practices worldwide and to develop innovative and effective approaches that foster international awareness and education. This program provides a firsthand experience that helps each of participant acknowledge differences around the world and embrace a perspective beyond countries of origin. Through the Global Perspectives experience, participants will enhance their knowledge and understanding of global higher education, gain a cultural understanding of the context for higher education in Europe, engage with new colleagues for professional endeavors whilst growing personally and professionally through shared experiences.
