The wildlife crossing over the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills reached a significant milestone on Monday, receiving its first layer of soil. The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, which went under construction in 2022, is one of only a handful of freeway overpasses created and intended for animals. Beth Pratt, California's executive director for the National Wildlife Federation, shared her excitement Monday about the 26-million-pound concrete bridge, which will be off-limits to humans and designed to help preserve the mountain lion population in the Santa Monica Mountains. After the soil is laid, about 5,000 native shrubs and wildflowers collected from the surrounding area will be planted on the crossing. Dutch photographer Marcel Heijnen, originally trained as a graphic designer with a strong foundation in visual arts from his industrial designer father, transitioned to photography during a 2008 sabbatical. After moving to Singapore in 1992 for work, he spent time in Hong Kong during the 1990s before leaving around the Handover. When he returned in 2015, he was pleased to find parts of the city, including Sai Ying Pun, still dotted with small mom-and-pop shops, many home to resident cats. Inspired by these scenes, Heijnen captured dozens of felines in the vibrant images featured in Shop Cats of Hong Kong. A second book, Shop Cats of China, followed, documenting cats from ten Mainland cities. In both books, the photos are accompanied by Ian Row’s evocative haikus, a traditional form of Japanese poetry, and Catharine Nicol’s historical insights. A heartfelt thank you to Marcel for providing me with the images and allowing me to share them with you.
