VPI Cave Club NSS [National Speleological Society] Student Grotto 000003. Established 1943. Caving club based in Blacksburg VA. πŸ¦‡

We meet at 7:00pm in Smyth 146on the Virginia Tech campus every Friday night during the regular semesters. Exceptions are during Spring and Winter breaks and during final exams. Meetings are open to anyone interested in learning about caves and caving. Most cave trips are planned at the meetings, so attending a meeting is the best way for a student to get underground. The trip leader will announce the cave, the expertise level, what you'll need to bring, and the time and place of departure for the trip. If you cannot attend a meeting but want to go caving, please email the club's vice president. Many meetings include a caving-related program. These are often slide shows of recent caving excursions. This is a great chance to see what caving has to offer in other states and even other countries.

On September 29, Natural Heritage’s Karst Protection Coordinator, Wil Orndorf, was recognized as a 2025 Recovery Champion by the US Fish and Wildlife Service for the Northeast Region. This award recognizes USFWS staff and their partners whose work is advancing the recovery of endangered and threatened species of plants and animals. Wil’s contributions to the protection of the Madison Cave Isopod and the Lee County Cave Isopod were noted, along with his decades of work promoting the conservation of cave and karst resources in the Commonwealth and beyond. Late last year, UNESCO designated 13th September as the International Day of Caves and Karst. From 9/10-9/13 Katarina Kosič Ficco attended and presented about the Virginia Natural Heritage Karst program and its approach to karst management at a scientific conference entitled Explore, Understand and Protect: Towards Sustainable Management of Caves and Karst, held by the Slovenia Karst Research Institute in honor of the first International Day of Caves and Karst. This was the only presentation about a state or national karst program, outlining how through scientific approaches and data management DNH helps landowners manage Virginia's caves and karst. The presentation emphasized the rich biodiversity of subterranean Virginia and how its documentation fits into the NatureServe framework. The nearly three hundred conference participants included renowned scientists from around the world who have authored some of the most important karst-related studies, including the President of the International Union of Speleology and UNESCO leaders. Katarina was honored to present the DCR-DNH karst program as a success story at such a distinguished event that represents a milestone in cave and karst management.
