We are proud to announce that our member, Buddhika Abeyrathne, PhD student in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been awarded the Student Research Award – 3rd Place at the 14th Aquaponics Association Conference, USA (2025) ✨

🏆 Winning Research:
Promoting Circular Agriculture through Sustainable Nutrient Recycling in Sandponic Systems

Buddhika’s research was recognized for introducing sand as an integrated biofilter and planting substrate in aquaponics to:
1️⃣Reduce nutrient contamination through nitrogen transformation
2️⃣ Minimize land use with compact, high-efficiency systems
3️⃣ Advance low-cost, accessible food production in water-limited environments

This remarkable achievement highlights the innovative contributions of our members toward sustainable agriculture and food security.
