Could not be more proud to have gone through the homecoming process with all these amazing court candidates. I am so honored to have been named royalty and can’t wait to put on an event in the spring in support of and pediatric cancer awareness. @ Blacksburg, Virginia

When I was ten, I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (a rare form of bone cancer). Throughout my entire journey with cancer I was lucky enough to have an incredible support system around me of family and friends. However, this is not the case for every child battling cancer. This campaign is focused on creating and bolstering those support systems for other kids like me who are fighting to knock out cancer. Also, ignore the Duke shirt, Go Hokies!!!

Just a little info about this amazing charity I hope to raise money for if I am to be named homecoming royalty this year. Special Love is a Virginia based non-profit who strives to bring children and families affected by pediatric cancer together. They host camps for patients and siblings, award scholarships, and so much more. They truly are making childhood cancer patients and survivors lives easier and working to eliminate this terrible disease.

The reality that so many young children have to go through each and every day facing a cancer diagnosis is haunting. I want to encourage all of us to do what we can to support the fight against pediatric cancer.

This unfortunate fact means that there will be 11,050 children and their families who are faced with a cancer diagnosis this year. That is 11,050 lives being flipped upside down and being thrust into a whirlwind of treatment, surgeries, and limitations that could last years. This is why we as Hokies should work to change this statistic and support families being affected by pediatric cancer.

Now that homecoming has officially begun, I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Andrew McCaffrey and I am a senior studying biology with the hopes of attending medical school after graduation. What led to this dream and ultimately this campaign was my being diagnosed with osteosarcoma when I was 10 years old. While this news was devastating for my family and I, I was fortunate enough to have an incredible support system that stood by me throughout my journey with cancer. The goal of this campaign is to encourage and inspire the Virginia Tech community to be that support for the incredibly courageous kids who are fighting or have fought against cancer. I can’t wait to continue to share my passion with you all as we work to KNOCK OUT CANCER.
