In loving memory of Danae!

Danae supported countless school days in social studies, current events, and individual tutoring sessions. Her wiggles and bark (that often got her in trouble for disrupting class) were enjoyed for many years on campus, and the halls were indeed too quiet after she passed.

Dogs can sometimes be the best teachers, picking up on things that human ears and even hearts can miss. And Danae earned her masters degree! Thank you for sharing so much of your life, love, and personality with us!

Four-Legged Friends at BMA!

Dogs on campus bring more than wagging tails, they can help create moments of connection, comfort, and joy throughout the day including during and after school. Time with our canine companions can encourage students (and staff!) to pause, practice social interaction, build responsibility, and enjoy a calming break from the day.

From classroom check-ins to relaxing after school, our dogs are an important part of the BMA community!

Community service gives Black Mountain Academy students the opportunity to do more than lend a helping hand, it helps them discover the value they bring to their community. Through volunteering, students practice teamwork, communication, responsibility, empathy, and problem-solving while building meaningful connections with others.

Giving back is a chance to step outside ourselves, contribute to something bigger, and see how even small acts can make a difference. We’re proud of our students for showing up, pitching in, and making their community a better place!

When the summer temperatures rise, our students know how to make their own adventure! First, they put their teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills to the test in an escape room. Then, they traded the puzzles for cold mountain creeks and a refreshing swim!

Whether we're solving challenges indoors or cooling off together outdoors, every adventure is an opportunity to build connections, practice skills, and make great memories with friends.

10 Years of Community Immersion in Black Mountain, North
Nestled just outside Asheville in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the town of Black Mountain is far more than the backdrop for our school - it's an essential part of every student and every family’s journey. For the past decade, our students have built meaningful connections here: working out at our local YMCA; exploring our parks and trails, becoming regulars at the public library; enjoying coffee, ice cream, and an amazing meal locally owned restaurants downtown; volunteering with organizations that strengthen our community; and gaining real-world experience through experiential learning, internships, and part-time jobs.
These everyday experiences offer something no classroom alone can provide. They foster independence, build confidence, and create a genuine sense of belonging. It's one thing to teach social and life skills; it's another to watch students practice them while ordering a pastry at a neighborhood coffee shop, greeting familiar faces downtown, or serving hot meals at the Open Table each Wednesday.
After ten years, we've learned that the most meaningful growth happens when learning extends beyond campus and into the community. Black Mountain isn't simply where our school is located - it's where students discover their capabilities, build lasting relationships, and develop the confidence to navigate the world well into their future.

🎉 10 Years of Partnering with Families! 🎉
At Black Mountain Academy, we believe lasting change happens when families are actively involved in the therapeutic process. Parents are essential partners throughout their child's journey, working alongside our team every step of the way.
Each week, our therapists connect with parents through individualized family calls, offering updates, coaching, guidance, and practical strategies to support their child's progress. Every three months, families return to campus for our Family Workshops, where parent education and hands-on skill building equip families with practical tools to strengthen their relationship, reinforce healthy patterns, and foster lasting growth.
Over the past decade, we've had the privilege of hearing from families about the lasting impact of their experience.

A parent recently shared:
“The Black Mountain Academy program literally transformed our son and our family! The structure of the program from academics to residential life not only taught our son skills that he will use for the rest of his life but also helped him manage his emotions, build social skills and become more independent. But most importantly, we got our son back! Thank you BMA!”

That level of trust isn't built by chance. It's earned through consistent communication, meaningful collaboration, and a shared commitment to supporting the entire family—not just the student.
