Art in the Afternoon

Art in the Afternoon An arts-based after school program in Black Mountain, North Carolina. We serve students in grades K-5 We love the energy that kids bring with them after school!

We take that energy and wrestle it down and twist it up and out comes some amazing art work! Kids are inspired and encouraged by looking at art from other cultures, artists, and learning about history. We talk about and critique each other's art work. We use unusual materials and turn the ordinary into the extraordinary! Earth-friendly projects that encourage recycling are emphasized. Our students are proud and our parents are amazed at the quality of the art work that is produced!

The art challenge was : experiment with water color ( salt optional). Once dry, incorporate your leftover scraps, add line work, include some hand stitching, optional buttons. These are 4-5th graders solutions. I love how they are all so different, after receiving the same challenge. We’re creating thinkers and problem solvers!!

Our drawings came to life ! These are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders. These young artists worked so hard. They learned the blanket stitch, how to sew on a button, and they followed through with their plans! Life skills y’all!

This was so funny! One artist was so proud of the painted mouth on his portrait and accidentally smooshed it against his buddy’s sleeve! It’s a perfect print of lips and teeth! 😝🤣 there’s even A printed nostril !

The shirt wearing artist said “ this is my new favorite shirt!”

I can’t imagine any other job that would bring this much entertainment and joy to me.

Abstract one line portraits with k-1. The rules : 1. Draw big! 2. Draw slow! 3. Don’t pick up your pen 4. Don’t worry about what it looks like. Just have fun! This was supposed to last longer than one class but I love the simplicity so I think we are leaving them as is !
