For the past year, I have volunteered with North Carolina's Owen High School (a public school outside of Asheville) to create an education program that will teach leadership and teamwork through my radical filmmaking techniques (think ropes courses and uniformed crew drills). This is more than about just
making a movie, it's about starting a dialogue and fostering students to become leaders and active members of their community. From making short documentaries on lunch prices in the cafeteria to capturing track meets and the FFA cook-outs, my hope is to create an infrastructure for filmmaking in this community that will push these kids to express their voices, ideas, and questions. I have volunteered my time and equipment to the students this semester but I do not want all their progress and passion to disappear when I return to NY this summer (to start paying off the massive debt this adventure has created). My dream is to leave each one of my 9 students camera so they can keep making films and support their community. Canon HDSLRs have been instrumental in taking the technical side out of film education and empowering students to make films based on emotion and passion. I've watched students find their voice while creating the videos and stills that makeup this page and our website (http://warhorsefilmmaker.com) using Canon cameras like the 5D mkii. Yet even with the impact we are making on the community and the new way we are teaching high schoolers to develop the soft skills our workforce needs, Canon still has not returned my inquiries about working with my class. I am looking to you to "like" this page and pass it around to anyone else who wants to support high school filmmaking. I'm hoping if we can get 10,000 likes for each of my students (90,000 total) it will be enough to prove to Canon that this program and the passion of my students is worth supporting.
