Brave means trying something even when it feels hard or scary. That was the goal word for our indoor climbing program with The Hope Center of Hendersonville at Fiddlehead Farm and Forest.

Before anyone climbed, we talked about times we had already been brave. At the end we came back to the circle to answer one question. "Today, I was brave by..."

Bravery looks different for everyone. For one person it means climbing to the top. For someone else it means putting on a harness for the first time, or asking for some help. You don't have to climb the highest. Sometimes the bravest thing is simply taking the first step when you are ready.

The more we practice being brave, the easier it gets to try new things, not just at the climbing wall, but in everyday life.

A letter from the Governor’s office arrived at Lake James by hand 📝

At our Celebration of Access event, NC Department of Natural & Cultural Resources Secretary Pamela Cashwell presented us with a letter from Governor Josh Stein.

The Governor wrote to welcome everyone to the celebration and to recognize the partnership between Waypoint Adventure and NC Friends of State Parks, which is bringing adaptive kayaking and hiking to visitors with disabilities at western NC Division of Parks and Recreation. He thanked NC Friends of State Parks for funding recent accessibility work across the park system, and closed by pointing toward a stronger, more accessible North Carolina.

“I can’t express how thankful I am for the incredible support provided by North Carolina State Parks, Friends of State Parks, and NC Department of Natural & Cultural Resources. This partnership is truly changing the face of disability access in our North Carolina State Parks and I’m just so glad Waypoint Adventure NC gets to be a part of it. Looking forward to seeing how this thing progresses into the future!”

- Adam Combs, Waypoint Adventure Co-Founder & NC Director

Removing barriers in the outdoors takes agencies, funders, and programs pulling in the same direction. We’re incredibly grateful to be one part of that.

Partnerships like the one between North Carolina State Parks and Recreation and Waypoint Adventure_NC bring people together, even on the rainiest of days, and they’re vital to ensuring EVERYONE has access to NC’s beautiful state parks. What a way to celebrate by showcasing this relationship and then getting out on the water. We’re grateful and excited to continue this work.

Volunteers needed for two kayaking programs this week 📣

We’re on the water tomorrow, 7/28, and Thursday, 7/30, and we still need kayaking volunteers at Lake James State Park from 8:30am to 1:30pm. If you’ve got the morning free, we’d love to have you!

Tomorrow, we’ll be paddling with Veterans Restoration Quarters, a program through Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry that supports veterans through housing, job training, counseling, and community. Thursday’s program is open enrollment through our partnership with North Carolina State Parks and Recreation and Friends of State Parks.

Some of the best days on the water are the ones that almost didn’t happen 🛶🌧️

5 paddlers came out to Lake James despite the rain, 3 first time kayakers, 3 first time volunteers, 1 rogue beach volleyball that turned into an impromptu game, and zero people who cared that they were already wet. That’s our “Summer of Flow” for you!

Would you have paddled in the rain? Tell us below ⬇️
