This free event is from 6:00pm to 8:30pm, and everyone is welcome! Come enjoy stories from participants, families, and volunteers.

The silent auction is stocked with gear, local goods, and experiences from businesses and partners across . Every bid goes straight back into accessible recreation programs for people with disabilities in these mountains ⛰️

Early this month, our team headed into the Black Balsam and Shining Rock area of the USDA Forest Service Pisgah National Forest for three days and two nights of staff outdoor leadership training ⛰️

Everyone owned a teaching topic on the trail. Program Coordinator Gill led expedition behavior and campsite selection. Deputy Director Ryan covered complex decision making and risk assessment in the backcountry. Program Coordinator Theresa taught pack fitting and situational leadership. Per Diem Jacob took on compass orientation and map navigation.

Ryan also fed everyone pita pizzas perfected over 20 years of backcountry cooking! The s’mores were abundant too! We had great chats with local hikers along the trail, caught beautiful sunrises, and saw stars so clear we found the Milky Way.

To every participant, family, and caregiver who trusts us with their adventure, you deserve leaders who are prepared, skilled, and genuinely confident in the front country and the backcountry. We believe outdoor leadership is not a checkbox. It is an ongoing commitment and our team takes it seriously. So proud of everyone who was out there 💙

This one is for Rennie 💙

Every Wednesday this summer, Rennie showed up at the Waypoint Adventure office ready to do whatever needed doing. Packing volunteer t-shirts, posting program flyers around Black Mountain, grabbing the mail, sweeping the floor, cleaning name tags, joining us for kayak clean-up day, and even getting out on the water for a kayaking program. He did it all, and he did it with the best attitude!

We celebrated the end of his summer with us with a conga line all the way to The Hop Ice Cream in downtown Black Mountain. Rennie you will be missed on Wednesdays around here, but we cannot wait to see you on the next adventure. This summer was better because you were in it. Thank you for everything! 🙌

Fall registration is now open! We have eight accessible adventure days available for you to sign up! 📣

All programs are open to people with disabilities of all ages. Off-road hiking wheelchairs available if needed and once you register we will reach out to talk through your specific needs and accommodations.

Each program is $20 and the kickoff is $10. Caregivers can register to attend at no cost.

It started with a phone call: “Do you think Justin could go rafting?”

With some careful planning and a little troubleshooting, including a Vipamat by eqwal Hippocampe secured right into the boat, the answer was a resounding YES! Before long, Justin had his seat on the French Broad River. 🏞️

About thirty seconds into the trip, a bald eagle appeared on the riverbank, fishing the shallows like we weren’t even there. We paddled right underneath it, and it didn’t even budge. 🦅

From there, it was nothing but splashing, laughing, and a whole lot of fun all the way down the river.

Huge thanks to Robert and Pete from French Broad Adventures for guiding us and making the day possible. Waypoint’s first rafting trip was in the books, and hopefully it’s not the last!

Introducing Waypoint Socials 👋

A full adventure day can feel like a big first step, and not everyone is ready to sign up for one right away. So, we built another way in to meet us and meet each other!

Waypoint Socials are get-togethers after hours for people with disabilities, friends, family, caregivers, volunteers, and supporters.

First one up is a kickball social with our friends at Camp Lakey Gap 🌳🧡. Come for the game, the pizza 🍕, or a conversation with someone new. Every version of showing up works here.

Monday, September 14 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at 222 Fern Way in Black Mountain. Register at the link in bio 🔗.

“Tori, I’m doing it, I’m climbing.” 🧗

Recently at Waypoint Adventure, Aiden from The Hope Center of Hendersonville called that down from the wall, while using an ARC harness for the first time. Tori turned to their sister Eillish and said, “Look at Aiden go.” Nine adults climbed that day, some brand new to it, and some back for more. The goal word was brave, trying something even when it feels hard or scary.

We’ve had a ton of kayaking programs at Lake James and Lake Norman through our open enrollment programming supported by North Carolina State Parks and Recreation and Friends of State Parks, really feeling the Summer of Flow on the water out there! 🛶

And we’ve also been rappelling and climbing in Linville Gorge with a group of active duty soldiers from BENCHMARK Adventure Ministries. The sky was solid grey the whole hike in, then the clouds pulled back right as people were standing at the edge of a 140-foot drop working up to it. We set two top ropes at Table Rock after that, and a downpour walked everyone back to the trailhead, proud of what they had conquered. 💪
