Montessori is a way of helping children learn by providing an environ-ment where they can learn at their own pace. The children are guided in choosing work at their level. Montessori “work” is a child’s play! In a traditional school, the teacher teaches and the children listen. Then they all do the work. In a Montessori school, the teacher demonstrates, and the children are free to choose to do th

at particular “work” or something else that meets their needs. In a traditional school, at the end of a chapter, a test is given. If a child hasn’t understood the subject, they get a low grade and the entire class moves on. The child may never understand what was “taught”. In a Montessori school, the child is free to learn at their own pace, and they may continue to work in an area until they have a complete understanding of it. They may even choose to leave it and revisit it another day. In a traditional school a child who continually gets low grades begins to think they are “dumb.” Their self-esteem suffers, and if this continues, they may start causing problems in school to cover up their lack of under-standing. For many children, the joy of learning is replaced with fear and dread. We have all read how children are so excited to start school, but by the third or fourth grade that love is gone for many kids. Maria Montessori was the first female doctor in Italy in the early 1900’s. She was pioneer in discovering that children learn through all their senses. She studied thousands of children all over the world. A typical Montessori class consists of about 20 children between the ages of 2 ½ to 6. The younger children learn from the older students, and the older ones reinforce their learning by helping a younger child.
