Reading in meaningful phrases helps a sentence sound natural and makes its meaning easier to understand.

WHAT IS SYNTAX?
Syntax is the way words are arranged to create meaningful sentences.
Students may recognize every word in a sentence but still have trouble understanding it if they cannot see how the words work together.
Explicitly teaching sentence structure helps students understand:
• Who or what the sentence is about
• What is happening
• How the ideas are connected
• What the writer wants the reader to understand
