Camp Shenanigans Continue!
Today was HOT! With the heat index, it felt like 111°—the hottest day I've worked at camp so far. The forecast says tomorrow is supposed to be even hotter!
We did everything we could to beat the heat: plenty of water breaks, Gatorade, Popsicles, and cooling off under the refreshing outdoor shower. Even with the sweltering temperatures, the campers didn't let the heat slow them down. They were out in the yard playing soccer and football as if it were a cool spring day.
This morning, one of the campers proudly showed me a cucamelon and a praying mantis egg sac. He taught me several new things about nature today, and I love that camp gives the kids opportunities to become the teachers sometimes.
The mud pit was in full swing as campers stayed cool in the thick mud. They built an impressive slip-and-slide along with trenches, canals, dams, and reservoirs. Watching them work together, solve problems, and engineer their muddy masterpieces is always one of my favorite parts of the day. They are becoming quite the little engineers!
From the pond, excited shouts of, "I caught another fish!" echoed across camp all afternoon. I was probably more excited than I should have been when I looked up and saw our goose family return to the pond, even if it was only for a short visit before flying off on another adventure. The campers quickly noticed something new—they now had eight geese instead of seven! That discovery led to a whole flurry of questions: Where did the new goose come from? Was it part of their family? Would it stay with them? I love listening to the curiosity and wonder that fills this place.
One camper accidentally hooked a turtle while fishing today. Thankfully, luck was on our side, and we were able to free it quickly with little to no injury. We all breathed a sigh of relief.
Not long after that, we spotted the most beautiful Red-spotted Purple butterfly. Mrs. Anderson and I stood there scratching our heads, trying to figure out why it was called a Red-spotted Purple butterfly when neither of us could find any purple on it!
The campers were also very inquisitive today, wondering where Principal Roberts, Ms. Jorden, and Mrs. Koss were. That's pretty typical whenever they're off. Camp just isn't quite the same without them, and their absence is always noticed. It's a sweet reminder of how much these children love the people who pour into them every day.
Another hot day, another day full of laughter, muddy adventures, curious questions, and little moments that remind me why I love being here.
