BIxby High School’s “the TROUPE” kicked off the competitive speech season by sending a small group to compete at the Broken Arrow invitational today. We crowned two champions and had six students qualify for regionals later this year. This is the first step on the road to state for these talented performers. Special shout out to the middle school team for their third place finish in the Novice Division. Go Spartans!

Today they got their free swag and then went to the Louisville Slugger Museum, and tomorrow we're seeing Louisville Shakespeare in the Park in a production of Shakespeare's 12th Night. I cannot say enough about how important it is that ALL Bond issues pass in Bixby on Tuesday.

The School Bond – Our high school should be the best, and right now it is suffering from lack of renovations as the district has had other needs as we grow. We have outgrown our space, and going into the high school from other buildings in the district right now really is like going back in time. The district is not going to stop growing. We need a new high school. And the benefits for the theatre, speech, and debate programs will be incredible. From what is planned we will have a new larger space for classroom activities and research ability and updated and larger rehearsal and storage spaces which means the program will have options for performance that we’ve never had before. (Plus, this DOES NOT INCREASE TAXES – just keeps the rate the same from the last passed bond.)

The Transportation Bond – Legally this has to be a different bond from the school bond, but it’s needed just as much. Busses are important!

The City Bond - The City of Bixby and Bixby Public Schools are partnering to build a $43M state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center (PAC). The Bixby PAC will seat 1200-1500 people and accommodate all of Bixby's rapidly growing performing arts programs: Choir, Band, Drama, and more. This venue will be a local destination for national and international acts to perform right in our own backyard. Students will be able to work and perform in a state of the art professional facility, and will be able to work WITH professional techs and actors as the facility brings in shows. I’ve personally talked to the architects about what we need in this space as a performance space, and they’ve included everything we could need to expose students to the possibilities of creating live, professional performances.

I know that people are concerned about the tax increase. I’ll be clear, what we’re talking about is 12 cents a day, or $44 per 100k of property. I know that can be challenging, but it doesn’t seem like a lot to me for all the opportunities this will give our students and the Bixby community.

Please vote YES on Tuesday.
