WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I am from Washington State. I have lived my entire life in the Pacific Northwest with exception of one school year and just moved to Bismarck in November of 2021.

WHAT DO YOU DO?
I am the Director of Career Advising and Counseling Services at Bismarck State College.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU HAVE FACED IN YOUR JOURNEY, SO FAR?
Having never been to North Dakota, and not knowing anyone in the area, it can be a challenge to know what is going on, where things are and just ways to get involved. People talk about how the cold winters are the hardest part of moving here but really the hardest thing is trying to get connected into the community without knowing anyone.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I get to help individuals transition from being a student (which for many is all they have known for 12+ years) to being a part of the workforce and member of the community. This transition can be challenging and scary, but my team and I get the opportunity to help them navigate this and prepare them for the future.

WHY BISMARCK-MANDAN?
A part of what brought my family here was our jobs, but really that was just the confirmation for choosing this area. My wife and I wanted a place where we could raise our daughters that offered a better education, safer communities, and more activities than where we lived. Bismarck and North Dakota as a whole offered all of these things and more.

FAVORITE LOCAL SPOT?
My oldest daughter has fallen in love with going to Bismarck Bobcats Hockey games and I too enjoy going and cheering on the guys. It is a great atmosphere and just a ton of fun. I’ve also enjoyed the food scene here with places like JL Beers, Sickies and of course Space Aliens with my family.

WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D HAVE FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO MAKE THEIR MARK HERE?
Find at least one thing to do every week in the community. Whether that is attending presentations like the One Million Cups or Downtowners events, joining a group like a writers group, attending a sporting event or something at the event center, or even just trying a new place to eat. You truly can’t make an impact or your mark if you never break out of your daily routine. Community and relationships happen when you get involved, even when it is scary and difficult, the more you make this area your home the more you are going to have an impact.

The Spring 2022 Job Fair hosted by Bismarck State College is tomorrow and is free and open to the public. Bring copies of your resume and talk with the 90 businesses that will be there.

Whether you are looking for a full time career, a summer job or a part time job during the school year, your résumé is a key piece of achieving your goals. That is why the MACC is hosting two Résumé Workshops that are free for all BSC Students. If you need someone to check your grammar and spelling, advice on what to put in your résumé, or need help to start a résumé this is your opportunity to have experienced professional look over and assist you.

These are free drop-in events designed to help you prepare for your future.

February 17th – 2pm to 4pm in the Flickertail and Dakota Rooms (Bottom floor of the Student Union)

Get your resume ready for the the BSC Spring Career Fair on March 2nd. Businesses from a variety of fields will be there looking to talk with potential candidates. It is free to attend and open to the public.

It’s hard to believe, but this semester is going to be finished very soon and that means it’s time to make sure you are registered for your Fall semester classes. New, incoming BSC students have now begun to register meaning courses will be filling up fast. To get the classes and schedule you want and need for Fall, you need to register now.

This week Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, BSC is holding a Lunch Hour Registration Blitz from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day in the Student Union to answer questions and help students with their BSC Fall 2021 class registration. Not only can you walk away from this event ready for next semester, you could also score a $50 or $100 gift card to the BSC Bookstore!

As of today, both BSC Summer 2021 and Fall 2021 class registration is now open for current students!
