The 11th Annual Eastern Sierra History Conference is just one week away!

Are you the kind of person who gets excited when you see a "Point of Historical Interest" sign along the road? The Eastern Sierra History Conference is the place to be to learn more about the stories behind these signs.

Join us October 23–25 for the 11th Annual Eastern Sierra History Conference in Bishop, CA.

The Eastern Sierra History Conference brings together scholars and storytellers to share some of the fascinating stories that shape the Eastern Sierra and Great Basin.

📆 Saturday, October 23 - Sunday, October 25
📍 Cerro Coso Community College, Bishop, CA

Topics for 2026 include the history of water in the Owens Valley and Mono Lake, a retrospective of 100 years of Lee Vining’s history, recovering the Nium Trail, pioneer architecture and its preservation in Bodie, following the route of the Carson & Colorado Railroad, and a look at the life of Nellie Baker Bly. Experience the magic of fall in the Eastern Sierra with us! 🍂

Join us this Saturday, October 3rd for a free Fall Colors Walk through the aspen groves along the East Fork of Rock Creek. We'll learn more about the changing season and how it affects the plants and animals of the Eastern Sierra.

When: Saturday, October 3rd from 10:00am - 11:30am
Where: Meet at East Fork Day Use Parking Lot (approximately 5 miles from Tom's Place up Rock Creek Rd.)

Walk will consist of about 1.5 miles on a mostly flat dirt trail. Please be sure to bring appropriate clothing layers for the weather, walking/hiking shoes, water and sun protection. Inclement weather will cancel.

Spot Saturn and other starry wonders through telescopes and enjoy stories about the night sky and how dark skies are protected.

📆 Saturday, October 3 from 7:00pm - 9:00pm
📍Tuttle Creek Campground, Site #68

Bring your chair, snacks, water and a flashlight or headlamp (red light preferred to preserve night vision). Please dress in layers for the weather, nights can be cool at this time of year!

Sierra Forever is now hiring for an Interpretive Specialist for the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area. This position is funded as a part of the Cooperative Agreement with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Some of the main responsibilities will be interpretive programs, docent coordinator for volunteers, stewardship and maintenance tasks, visitor center support, data collection, and patrolling the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area.

Watercolor with a Ranger this September in the Mono Basin!

Paint outdoors while learning about the unique ecosystems of the Mono Basin and Eastern Sierra. Friendly Forest Service rangers will provide all watercolor supplies and interpretive information about the natural wonders around you.

All ages are welcome and no previous art experience required.

First two dates drop in at South Tufa picnic tables between 11am - 2pm. The second two dates' locations will be announced later as the fall colors start to show up.

Lee Vining is turning 100 and we are excited to be part of the celebration this Saturday! Stop by our booth at the Community Fair at Hess Park to say hello, learn more about our work in the area, and get a first look at the schedule of presenters for this year's Eastern Sierra History Conference.

Join us for a free Nature Walk at Horseshoe Lake tomorrow, August 22nd from 10:00am to 11:30am.

Join us this Saturday, August 22nd, at the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center for a book signing event with Dr. Robert Marks, author of Deep Time in the Mono Lake Basin.

Dr. Marks will be at the Mammoth Visitor Center from 12pm - 4pm signing books and chatting about his new book looking at 10,000 years of history in the Mono Lake Basin.

Stop by and say hello and pick up a copy of this fascinating and sweeping history of people, ecology and water.
