Here is my take on autism, though it might be an unpopular opinion!? I don't know - you tell me:
First, it’s not a disability. It certainly doesn’t exist in a smooth collaboration with how we have set up the world, but that doesn’t mean that somebody with autism is broken. It’s our system that’s broken - not allowing those with neurodivergence to find their niche of success easily.
Second, if you really look at the way, the autistic brain works, you start to realize that they use more of their brain, in a more productive manner, than the rest of us. The way they embrace a non-linear space in their thinking is their gift. I believe that it is, in fact, an adaptation. A progression of the human species. We are so stuck in our linear, box, must be style of thinking, and ASD breaks that mold. It is, indeed, there brilliance. And if we look at the world around us, we start to realize that that type of thinking is going to be desperately needed soon… in fact it already is. Look at the world our teenagers are growing up in, look at the shifts we’ve taken in focus, speed of information, relationships between people, interconnectivity. It all requires non-linear thinking.
Third, just because we don’t understand how their brains work doesn’t mean that we need to fix it. We don’t need to know the cause of autism, because there doesn’t need to be a cure.
There’s a reason it’s a spectrum. It’s not a disease. It’s a relatable set of symptoms that we see more and more of, mainly because we’re more aware of it and secondly, because it is how our species is evolving. Let’s stop looking adhd, dyslexia, autism etc., etc., as something to be fixed and start learning from them. Let’s start allowing them to guide our pathway as we move forward as a species and learn learned from their ability to think unlike we do.
The key is making room for them. Making space for what we consider their differences to not just be included, or celebrated, but embraced.
