Woolley Institute for Spoken-Language Education

Alabama School for Hearing was born out of a joint effort between Children's HEAR Center and The Alabama Ear Institute.

The Woolley Institute for Spoken-Language Education (WISE), formerly the Alabama Ear Institute is a not for profit dedicated to teaching deaf children to speak. In 2018, our organization became the Woolley Institute for Spoken-Language Education (WISE). Our Goal is to create a learning environment that is similar to traditional preschool, while addressing the unique needs of children with hearing

loss that have chosen a spoken language approach to communication. We are committed to helping children further develop their listening, language, and speech skills in a positive and fun learning environment. Children are placed in low teacher-to-student ratio groups based on their listening age and language abilities. All classroom activities are designed to improve auditory skills, vocabulary, concepts, conversational skills, sentence structure, and speech skills. WISE has a mobile clinic that brings pediatric audiology services directly to communities across Alabama! 🚐💙

The WISE Mobile Resource for Kids (MARKS) is a 36-foot mobile clinic designed to help children who are deaf or hard of hearing access important hearing care.

The MARKS unit provides services including:
👂 Audiological services
🔊 Hearing screening and follow-up
🏫 School screenings
💙 Family education

By bringing care closer to home, WISE is helping families overcome barriers and making sure more children have access to the support they need to thrive.

SIPS FOR SOUND IS BACK!! 🎸🎶👏🏼

Join us Sunday, October 25th from 2–5 PM at Back 40 Brewery for an afternoon of live music, food & drinks, and fun for the whole family! All while supporting WISE!

Sips for Sound is our annual event to raise awareness and funds for the WISE mission while bringing people together to celebrate the work we do.

We’re excited to have some new additions and activities this year and can’t wait to share more with you soon! Grab a ticket and mark your calendars. We hope to see you there!

🍎 Hooray! This week marks the first days of school for many of our current and former WISE students across AL! We are so proud to partner with public and private schools across the state with our School Outreach Services to make the transition to neighborhood schools a smooth one.
✏️ WISE provides Auditory-Verbal Therapy and Educational Audiology services so that our students don’t miss a beat when they start school! Backpacks are packed and ready to roll for another great year!
