Rank advancement is a recognition of personal growth; it's not just a belt and piece of paper. Martial arts rank represents levels of physical skill, achieved through the discipline of personal commitment and a pursuit of perseverance.
Congratulations, Mr. Byne, our newest 5th gup. You're about halfway to black belt.
And congratulations, Dr. Grantland for achieving the rank of Cho Dan Bo. We now 'roll up the sleeves' to begin preparing for your 1st degree black belt exam.

"You've done plenty of Kihon, form, kata... it is enough! So, you learned a lot of different forms. But what do you, really know? You know nothing! It is important to go deeply inside, to get this feeling. When did you start to practice, and where did you begin? Which power, which energy you use? Where is it from the stomach, from the head, or the shoulders? If you do with muscles there will be no progress! I need to search inside for the sense which will trigger the change. You have to try to find something inside that will "move you". That is the Way of Karate." - lesson by Master Taiji Kase from his seminars
