Before Dewar Gaines '14 founded Gaines Family Farmstead, he was a business student at Birmingham-Southern College. Gaines says: "Birmingham-Southern is the best thing that ever happened to me as far as business goes. The liberal arts education fostered a way to think out of the box. It didn't necessarily prepare me for one career or another. I know I can do anything right now."
You may not think of classical music when you think of Alabama music, but uh...hey...it's a thing, and our next patch, Brian C. Moon, is proof of it. A Birmingham native, Brian is the Associate Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at UAB - The University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has a deep background in music, studying it as an undergraduate at UAB and receiving a Masters in Music Composition form Birmingham-Southern College. In addition to his composing he has taught music courses at both UAB and BSC. He is contributing member of the Birmingham Art Music Alliance and also plays and writes songs for several Birmingham rock bands. Brian's contribution to patchwork symphony is "La Chose Verte," a contemplative piano and violin piece, slated to be recorded at Cartographer Records at Alabama Contemporary Art Center by two Alabama musicians this winter.

On National Mentoring Day, we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Panther Partnerships program at Birmingham-Southern, started by former BSC President Linda Flaherty-Goldsmith in 2012. This structured mentoring program helps students to make meaningful connections with alumni and friends of the College, who offer career advice and coaching for the next generation of business and community leaders. Students selected for Panther Partnerships also participate in professional development seminars on networking, resumé-building, and interview skills. A mentor can make all the difference in a student’s life as they help them pursue a path that best suits their skills and interests.

This evening, Harvard Law Professor Randall Kennedy will speak at the BSC Harrison Honors Convocation on “Shall We Overcome?” addressing race and contemporary American society. Kennedy teaches courses on criminal law and race relations. He is an alumnus of Yale Law School and served as a law clerk for Justice Thurgood Marshall. His most recent book, “SAY IT LOUD!” is a New York Times Notable Book of the Year.

This event is free and open to the public, on Thursday, Oct 20 at 7:30 p.m. It will also be livestreamed on the BSC website - link in comments below.

Kennedy’s upcoming book “From Protest to Law” will be a comprehensive legal history of the civil rights movement. It focuses on Walker v. City of Birmingham (1967), the Supreme Court case that resolved the legality of Martin Luther King’s Good Friday arrest in 1963, among other cases. In a rare departure, the Court ruled against the Movement, and Kennedy explains why. While in Birmingham, Kennedy will complete research for the book.

On Tuesday, Oct. 4, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Merrill v. Milligan, a case about whether Alabama’s recently enacted congressional map violates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA). Did you know the case has two BSC connections? While Merrill refers to Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill, Milligan refers to Evan Milligan ’03, executive director of Alabama Forward, a statewide civic engagement table advancing efforts of nonpartisan organizations to expand the voter base, protect voting rights, and increase the accessibility of election systems. Arguing the state's case was Edmund LaCour '07, who was appointed Solicitor General of Alabama in May 2019. Milligan appeared on CBS Mornings earlier this week:

In its 31st annual "Best Colleges" rankings lists released today, The Princeton Review has named BSC one of the best colleges and universities in the Southeast, in no small part due to faculty.

"Professors get high marks across the board. Students say, 'The professors here make BSC what it is” and add, 'They’re always willing to help you out and meet with you if you need extra help. They make the academic experience here completely fabulous and well worth the hard work you have to put into your studies.' Academic standards are considered rigorous, and students say BSC 'demands the best from the professors and the best from the students. The faculty is fantastic, and the campus is beautiful.'"
