🖊️ Turn a Mesa Pen

Learn the beautiful craft of pen-turning in this beginner-friendly intro to woodturning. You’ll be guided through turning a wooden pen on the lathe and leave with a finished piece that’s perfect as a gift—or for yourself.

This session features the Mesa Pen — an elegant one-piece twist pen with a refined design and a lower band detailed with inlaid black diamond shapes. It’s a classic look that feels intricate without being over the top.

✨ Instructor: Terry Tingle — longtime member of the Alabama Woodturners Association and member of the American Association of Woodturners. Terry has been teaching pen turning for years, and his students’ work has been featured in art and craft shows across Alabama, including Mentone.

Age: all ages welcome—minors must be supervised by a guardian at all times.

🪵 Cutting Boards for Beginners

New to woodworking? This class is the perfect place to start. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll design and build your own cutting board using a variety of native hardwoods, then learn the core skills that take it from rough pieces to a finished, gift-worthy board.

Along the way, you’ll:
🔹 Choose from several cutting board designs
🔹 Learn proper assembling, gluing, and clamping techniques
🔹 Use the thickness planer and orbital sander
🔹 Sand and apply the right finish to protect your board

You’ll leave with a stylish ~8.5" x 11" handmade cutting board you can show off (or gift).

We’re excited to introduce Marc Steenbergh as a new blacksmithing instructor at Red Mountain Makers! Marc has been an artistic blacksmith for 10 years and is the owner/blacksmith of Warrior Forge Blacksmith Shop at Lowe Mill A&E in Huntsville, AL.

Warrior Forge specializes in:

🔹 Blacksmith experiences and classes

Marc’s work blends traditional techniques with both traditional and modern equipment, and we’re thrilled to have his knowledge and teaching in our shop.

Marc is also a husband, father, grandfather, and retired Army Veteran—and we can’t wait for our community to learn from him.

Marc is ready to start teaching our Birmingham community and there might be some classes already on the calendar 👀
