Today the school mourns the passing of our founder, Theresa Bruno Sprain. Ms. Theresa passed away peacefully on September 30, 2020, surrounded by her family.
We celebrate the life Ms. Theresa lived serving so many children at our school. It was her love for children and passion for education that led her to open our school in 1982. We are truly the beneficiaries of a life well spent focused on meeting the needs of children.
As we look forward to each school day, we thank Ms. Theresa for giving us the opportunity to positively impact the lives of our students and serve in her memory.
Our hearts and prayers go out to her family.
We will pass along additional information as it becomes available.

To say our front office won't be the same without you is an understatement! Thank you, Ms. Joan, for all of your love, kindness, and joy in the years you've been our secretary! We will miss you!

Colonel Raja Chari visited the JBMA K-8th grade levels on a virtual skype session today. The skype started off with an overview of his life where he told us about his career and accomplishments. After the overview of his life, we moved into the Q&A section in which the few selected questions were asked and he would give us extremely detailed answers. Many of us found his story interesting. Here are some of things that Colonel Raja Chari has accomplished:
- Raja graduated from the Air Force Academy with a bachelors degree and he graduated MIT with a Masters degree.
- Raja Chari is one of the 13 graduates of the Artemis Program. The Artemis Program's main goal is to inhabit the Moon and Mars.
- In his life before becoming an astronaut, Raja was a fighter jet pilot.
- He has been deployed in Iraq, and engaged with an enemy while he was in the Air Force.
- Later in his career he became a test pilot and flight commander for the new F-35.
It was a really cool experience to get to talk with a real NASA Astronaut!

We had so much fun this week learning about insects and spiders. We learned about the different types of insects, the life cycle of a butterfly, differences between moths and butterflies and how a spider spins a web. We found lots of creepy crawlies and released two baby frogs and a big moth on our playground. We traveled on our bus to the zoo where we saw lots of goats, butterflies, and elephants. We even saw a lion and a lioness!
We had a great time this week cooking pasta, blueberry muffins, pancakes, strawberry smoothies, and homemade granola. We used our practical life skills to pour, grate, stir, measure and whisk. We ended the week with a trip to Whole Foods where we got to make our own pizzas!
We had a great time this week learning about space. We learned about the different constellations and some of their stories, the sun, and more. We had a lot of fun at the Southern Museum of Flight. We learned so much about different planes and the people who flew them.
We had a great time last week learning about gardens. We learned about the different types of gardens, the parts of the bulb, the parts of a plant, types of flowers, and which foods grow on trees, vines, bushes, and in the ground. We explored the different gardens and fruit trees on our campus. We had so much fun at Birmingham-Southern College's Geodome. We learned a lot about the Alabama wildlife.

Through the past 36 years, Joseph Bruno Montessori Academy has transformed and established a long lasting legacy in the way children are educated. Building upon the foundations of Maria Montessori, and with consistent encouragement of a child’s self-discovery, JBMA has kept one mission throughout its three decades of existence: to provide the opportunity for all students to grow to their fullest potential cognitively, socially, emotionally, spiritually, physically, and aesthetically.
The Joseph Bruno Montessori Academy was founded in 1982 by Joseph Bruno and Theresa B. Sprain. It began as Whispering Pines School and accepted children 3-6 years old. The original campus included ten acres of beautiful wooded land, meadows, and a small house, eventually used as a classroom. A small building was erected for the first classroom of four children.
In 1983, Theresa Sprain received Montessori Certification and the school became Whispering Pines Montessori School. By 1989, the number of children attending the preschool increased to ninety. In 1984, Ms. Sue Richards joined her as a preschool teacher. Ms. Margaret Lewis, already a certified Montessori teacher from New Orleans, became our third preschool teacher in 1985. After Sue Richards took Montessori Training she became the first certified teacher of the 6-9 year olds. The lower elementary/office building was constructed in 1989, and the first classroom for children 6-9 years opened with Sue Richards as the first teacher. Our first 6-9 classroom enrolled twenty-two children. The school was renamed The Joseph Bruno Montessori Academy.
Major expansion occurred again in 1992. In 2002, the middle school building was opened and additional land was purchased. The increased acreage allowed space for a running track, two tennis courts, beach volleyball, and an outside basketball court. In 2007, a ropes course was added to the wooded and pond area of the school campus.
