UAB's African American Male Retention Program Nationally, only about 1/3 of African American male students go on to graduate from college once enrolled.
UAB has decided to face this problem head on and developed a program to assist African American Male students in their pursuit of graduating. BMEN helps to provide the tools necessary for our students to be successful academically and socially at UAB.

Congratulations to Lead Mentor Daneil Elston!
Daniel has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Award to the Czech Republic for the 2023-2024 academic year. This means he will need to defer his medical school admission as he will spend the year teaching English.
In addition, Daniel was also awarded the Honors College Deans Award!
We are so proud of Daniel! He has been a solid leader and a great example for all BMEN students.

BMEN mentor Yancey Williams II and the BMEN organization were awarded the prestigious President’s Diversity Award in the Undergraduate Student and Campus Organization categories.
We are grateful for this recognition and will continue to work to create spaces for Black men to be their authentic selves, learn and grow. We acknowledge there are many other student organizations that do powerful work on campus and we salute you and look forward to collaborating. Our goal is to not only make ourselves better but also those around us.
Yancey Williams II is a 4 year BMEN participant and has committed himself to a life of research that will enhance the heart health of people in marginalized communities. He is a great mentor, excellent student and exceptional brother.

In October, BMEN hosted “Call Me Doctor”. This programming was an opportunity for undergraduate students to connect with Professional students, professors and working professionals in the disciplines of medicine, dental, physical therapy, physician assistant and optometry.
The afternoon started with networking and transitioned to a panel discussion and ended with question and answer session.
Our goal is to make sure that students are prepared for their lives following UAB. Programs like this are the best catalyst to success.
